I'm studying geology in school, there isn't anything abnormal going on. It is just the news reporting on it far more frequently than they usually do. And yes, if all tectonic activity stopped, we would need to worry. The Earth has been cooling for billions of years, and eventually will run out of heat and will die. But that won't be for probably a few more billion years so its nothing anyone needs to worry about now.
