Would you do this?

DH and I are watching Home Alone.  The adults fly first class while the kids fly coach.

DH and I are discussing why we'd never do this.  Would you with your children/hypothetical children?

Re: Would you do this?

  • I never noticed that before. NMS

  • No. I didn't even notice that somehow. That's nuts. I mean I would like to, but wouldn't actually do it, I'd try to sit next to them actually.

  • My son has flown by himself multiple times.   But it seems very selfish to sit in first class while your children sit in coach.
  • That's always bugged me!  Who the heck is watching them??

One kid by himself = probably fine and won't become a pain.

Lots of kids that know each other = trouble.

  • No, If I flew first, she flew first and the reverse.

I have noticed on British Air, the middle eastern men fly first and the wife(s) and children in coach.
  • That seems odd to me. I wouldn't do it - I would feel bad that I couldn't intervene if they started acting up. Children should be supervised.

  • I think that's really rude to your kids. Besides, if you have children like the kid in Home Alone, you really need to be sitting with him/her!

  • No way.  Like Sucrets said, one kid might be okay (depending on the age and maturity of the child), but multiple kids who know each other and are left unattended for hours is a recipe for trouble.

And betrothed, I'm disgusted with most of the comments that you have posted. I don't think I've ever read such judgmental comments in my life. I'm so lucky that the girls I speak to on theknot are nothing like you...I would've never come on here for ADVICE if I would've encountered a big a bitch as you. I genuinely feel awful for your children or your future children, and I think it would be irresponsible of YOU not to invest in their future therapy sessions starting now. Because trust me when I tell you honey, they're gonna need it. ~jcaruncho2010

  • I'd be one pissed off passenger if I was sitting next to a unattended child IF the child was an asshole. I would not say anything, but I'd be pissed.

  • My dad did once.  But his company was paying for his ticket (and I was 18).

DH did that to me in May.  We were traveling with some friends and he gave DH his other upgrade. So the 2 of them sat in 1st class.  I gave him so much shiit the attendant gave me free drinks even though I was in coach.  I was flying with other friends, so I was not alone.

I know a guy who put his 8 year old step-son in coach when he was flying 1st class (company paid).  They were flying from Tokyo to Philly.  That guy was an ass.

To answer your question.  It depends on the age of the kids.  After age 12 or so, sure.  Younger than that nope.

  • No way. I'd want to be able to keep an eye on them and to make sure that they were behaving/not annoying other passengers.

  • Lets think about this in context for a second, they stuck all of their kids and flew first class.... and also forgot their kid at home (and then lost him the following hear). Not exemplary parenting to begin with.
  • Not young kids and not if my kids were jackasses. Then again, if I was paying for 4+ tickets I don't think I could afford a first class upgrade for any of us...

On our first plane trip, my parents got a row of 3 seats, and then the aisle seat right across. My brother and I switched off sitting in the window or middle seat, my parents switched off sitting in the aisle seats. The one next to us took care of us and the other relaxed, to an extent. We were 4 and 7 at the time, and traveling to my cousin's wedding.

Good point.  Even with all those kids I would notice my little brother or cousin was missing WAY before we got to the airport let alone on the plane.

That said, I could see my parents and aunts/uncles all being in first class and us in the back.   We would have the shiit beaten out of us if we acted up, so that would not have been an issue.

  • See, I think that was a cinematic missed opportunity.  Think of all the hilarity that could ensue when a group of rowdy children is left alone on a plane.

  • God no. It'd be stressful enough flying with kids without inflicting them unattended upon other poor souls.
  • I'd be less worried about them getting into trouble and more worried about any creepy mccreepersons just waiting to get them alone by the bathroom.  I'm paranoid like that though.
