cocktails

As much as we'd like to host a full bar, it's just too pricey for us. We're planning to provide red and white wine, champagne and beer. Now I'm wondering if it would add a ton of cost to host just one mixed drink... what cocktail would you want if you were at our wedding reception? My first thought was margarita - it's pretty universally liked, right? What about mojitos?

Re: cocktails

  • I Ion't think tequila is a good universal liquor. I would say rum or vodka. Mojitos sound good though. I like Whiskey Sours and sex on the beach!
  • I think margaritas are more universal than any other mixed drink I can think of.

But then, I think 98% of people would be fine with beer and wine.
  • In my group of friends, margaritas = people would end up dancing on the bar.  I would also agree that rum or vodka are pretty universal. That way, since I'm assuming you're also providing at least a couple of soft drinks, people could still kind of make their own drink. That might be confusing though, so it might actually be better to have an actual signature drink. Sorry I'm confusing myself.

Ditto this.  I think signature drinks are tricky because it's almost impossible to know what the majority of people would most enjoy drinking.  Since you're having champagne and wine already, maybe include some fun mixers like peach syrup and club soda in case people want to make fun (girly) drinks?
  • apple martinis match you
2 of us- a bunch of you! Celebrating the whole night through!
  • I'm trying to decide this also. I don't know very much about cocktails, since I am a big fan of many types of beer and wine, and it's hard for me to imagine that there are many people out there who couldn't find something to drink with several excellent beer or wine choices available.

I guess the way to figure out what to have would be to ask what types of guests don't tend to like beer or wine. Are they less experienced drinkers who prefer sweet drinks? People who only like hard alcohol? That might tell you what cocktail to pick.

Wouldn't it be nice to live together in the kind of world where we belong?
  • Whiskey sours or margaritas I think would work. I can't stand mojitos.

Or some kind of vodka punch.

  • I have a few people in mind... less experienced drinkers I guess you'd say. They don't like the taste of alcohol so it has to taste like a fruity drink for them to like it.

  • I used to hate beer and wine. I just started drinking wine a couple months ago, and I like it okay now, but I would definitely prefer a margarita! :) Love me some margaritas.

  • We did vodka cran (Cape Codders) and Jameson and Diets (because they were mine and my husband's favorite drinks, ie. B&G sig cocktails) and we ran out of 3 handles of vodka in 40 minutes. The Jameson was right behind that. You have to know your crowd, but those two drinks obviously went over big.
  • I'd second the cranberry vodka. That was the drink of choice at frat parties at my school, but I went to a weird school :) They're pretty universally nice, and it definitely hides the vodka.

If it's a summer wedding, a vodka tonic or gin and tonic might be nice.

We're just doing beer and wine, FWIW.
