Save the Date Etiquette

Is it acceptable to send online save the dates instead of doing a formal card or something in the mail? We are definitely planning on sending formal invitations.

    If you are sending and email, just know that it could get forwarded to people that you dont intend to invite.

     If it is because you don't want to spend the money on stamps and such maybe only send the save the dates to people that live out of state. We have a small wedding of only 60 and only had 8 people out of state so we bought 12 save the dates from shutterfly.com cost us 12 dollars and I had stamps already. I feel that save the dates are mostimportant when people have to consider travel. But they are cute and if I had the extra cash I would have loved to send them to everyone but we are closing on the house so there is little wiggle room in our budget right now.
