Haitian Orphans

I really can hardly handle this feeling of uselessness in the wake of this terrible tragedy.

I keep thinking about all of these children who have become orphans since Tuesday, and so many of them don't even exist on paper anymore, because their paperwork has been lost in the rubble.

I was just watching a segment on CNN about an orphanage of 25 children that is runned by two sisters from Pittsburgh, both of which are probably under 30. These young girls have given up living a charmed life in comparison to the life they live now to make the lives of orphans better.

After the segment originally aired on CNN, the sisters were allowed to fly 150 orphans from Haiti to Pittsburgh.

This information made me cry, and I'm actually still crying. Before Tuesday, they said about 320,000 children in Haiti are orphans. I can only imagine what it is now.

Re: Haitian Orphans

  • You're right- the whole thing is just heartbreaking.

When the Tsunami hit Asia a few years ago, I felt the same way. It's close- but not close enough that most people could get there. It's hard to know how that these people so close to you have lost everything and there's not a lot you can do, save donating money.

  • It is very sad. Its also sad that people who had pending adoptions in Haiti now have no idea if their child is still alive, or where they are.. .and the courts will have a long time before they are functional again. Its sad on both sides.
I want babies of my own, but if there are truly that many more orphans now that need homes, I would be more than willing to adopt one or two, and I'm sure FI would be too.

  • It is so sad.  There are many countries in Africa where there are a very high percentage of orphans and I don't think that most of the Western World really ever hears about this.  For example, 1 in 5 children in Zambia are orphaned.  I feel like the situation in Haiti is devastating but if there is any good that has come of it, it is a greater awareness of these issues.  Hopefully it will change the way that a lot of us use our resources and reach out to help others in the World who are less fortunate than we are.
