The 19 Days of Harry Potter: 18 Days to go!

I think my counting is off because on the 19th of November I will be saying 1 day to go. I should fix that.

So, what do you think about the casting in the movies as compared to the characters in the book? Anyone you think was cast wrong or not the way you pictured them? Who would you have liked to see in certain roles or who do you think is perfect for their role?

  • Well, I said this yesterday, but Neville isn't how I pictured him.  I disliked Lupin's casting at first, but he's grown on me.

Hmm...I'll have to think on this some more.

  • I think Luna's casting was just about perfect. I actually prefer her more in the movies than I do in the books.

Professor Umbridge was so not cast right. She's supposed to be a "toad" of a woman and I think she's just too normal and pretty in the movies. I was really looking forward to her, but I was really disappointed.

  • Badly Cast:
Michael FuckingGambon's Dumbledore. Hate. Hate times a hundred. He makes Dumbledore look weak and not at all like the most powerful wizard ever.
The Viktor Krum actor was far too good looking. Same for Cormac. Fleur wasn't pretty enough.
The kid who plays Neville didn't grow up to look like Neville, but that was a risk they had to take.
I didn't like Crouch the elder. At all.

    Perfectly cast:
Luna. I love Luna as much as I hate Gambon's Dumbledore.
    McGonagall
Alan Rickman as Snape. I mean, c'mon. He's PERFECT.

Not perfectly cast but I still loved it:
Slughorn. Jim Broadbent doesn't look the part, but I think he did a great job with the character.

<div>Agree. I used to envision Robert Sean Leonard. I still think he'd be great, if he wasn't so... American. I do think they made Sirius/Lupin/Pettigrew a little too old. If you follow the time line (GEEK ALERT) that bunch should only be in their early to mid 30s when HP&POA rolls around.</div>
  • Oooh ditto on not liking Umbridge, LOVING Luna, and Fleur not being pretty enough.

I think elder Crouch looks like Hitler and maybe that's what they were going for, but I didn't like it.

Not casting related really, but I didn't like how they interpreted Parseltongue for the movies.

Agree.  But maybe the casting people figured they'd had rough lives.  Turning into a werewolf or living as a dog has got to age a guy!

  • Huh.  I pictured Luna so differently and was a little horrified when I saw how they cast her.  I can't remember what I thought she should be anymore since the movies and the books have completely merged in my head (which, I'm a little sad about).

I didn't like Slughorn's casting, but he grew on me.

    McGongonall and Hagrid are perfect!
  • I really don't like Michael Gambon for Dumbledore. I know that Richard Harris died after Chamber of Secrets, but he was a far better Dumbledore. Michael has way too much energy and is too... active, flamboyant, I can't think of the word I'm looking for.
I also didn't really like Gary Oldman for Sirius, but he grew on me in Order of the Phoenix.

That was my thinking, too. Sirius being in prison, Lupin suffering every month and Pettigrew living completely as a rat for 12 years has got to have an effect on a human body.

Amen to that. He was so awkward and funny acting, especially when he was reading the rules for the TriwizardTournament and holding his hand out at a weird angle.
I also agree about Slughorn, he's way to tall and not as fat as I pictured Slughorn to be, but the acting was great.

<div>A lot of what I hate about post-Harris Dumbledore isn't Gambon's fault, but I still despise his portrayal. The writing has a lot to do with it, though. In the 4th movie he tells Harry that he's been trying to figure out Voldemort's motivation and to connect the pieces but he can't. Ridiculous. Also in the 5th movie when he seems shaken up and troubled by Umbridge and vents his anger on students. </div>
  • I like all the characters to be honest.  However, shouldn't Harry's parents still be the age they were when they died?  Ghosts don't age.

I also hate when Draco needs a dye job BAD halfway through a movie ...... that's all I can stare at during the scenes where his hair just looks ridiculous with ugly roots.
  • Physically, I think the Draco casting was good, but that actor kind of sucks.

Very true. I've had some issues with the screenplay in all the movies. Especially in Half-Blood Prince when the added that stupid scene with Bellatrix and the Weasley house catching on fire. WTF was the point in that?

  • Alix is going to go all Lord Voldemort on you waltzing for starting these threads when she couldn't be included.

  • I didn't like Crouch either, and I can't judge yet, but Scrimgeour doesn't look right.

I didn't like Lockheart; I thought he should be... prettier.

I don't care for Fiona Shaw being a brunette Aunt Petunia.

I still prefer Richard Harris' Dumbledore, but I like Michael Gambon. How can you hate Dumbledore, you know?

PERFECT: Snape, McGonagall, Voldemort, Bellatrix Lestrange, Luna, Rita Skeeter, Lucius.

Harry, Ron, and Hermione are perfect now, but they all had to grow into their roles for me.
  • I feel like of the three principles, Emma Watson is the only one who's acting ability has gotten worse. Every time she expressively sighs or wiggles/contracts her eyebrows dramatically I want to punch her. I seriously hope she gives up acting all together after this.
  • I wish Harry was written in to become attractive.......I'd love to swoon over the hero, but of course there's no swooning you can do over him.

My views are probably skewed considering that I saw the first 3 movies and then read the books.  I love Alan Rickman as Snape.  He's perfect.  Bellatrix was cast perfectly too.  And, I'lve always had a (weird) crush on David Thewlis, so I love him as Lupin.  I may or may not have had sexy werewolf laden dreams about him.

Like Joy, I remember being very disappointed in the casting of Luna.  In my head, I pictured her completely different.

Holy Crap. We survived the first year!

  • I'm trying to stay away from everything HP related so its all a surprise. It's really tough.

  • Perfect Casting:
    Bellatrix

    Lucius

    McGonagall

    Snape
    Luna

I've also really started to like the way the guy who plays Voldemort acts the part.

Serius, Lupin, and the main three grew on me. Of the three, I really like Rupert playing Ron. He wasn't my favorite at first but now I think he really is perfect.

    Awful Casting:
Ginny (OMG I hate how they portray GInny)
    Umbridge
Tonks (I don't know, I just feel like she's an odd pick)
Fred & George Weasley (Again, just not exactly how I saw them. They were much hotter in my head.)

I think a lot of my annoyance comes from the ridiculously huge things they just sort of skipped over in the HBP movie that are going to be an issue in the DH. Are they just going to make up the rest of the memories that Dumbledore collected but they didn't put in the movie? I mean a lot of those are REALLY important.

  • I loved Rita, Luna, Snape, Lucius, McGonagall, Ron, Harry and Hermione.

Not a fan of Neville, Draco, or Crouch Sr.

The others I don't really have an opinion on. I'm more of a visual person, so I have a hard time imagining what the author describes without seeing an actual picture. Then when the movie comes out I tend to put that picture to what I read.
