Am I reading this correctly?

http://forums.theknot.com/Sites/theknot/Pages/Main.aspx/wedding-boards_getting-shape_just-gastric-bypass

She lost 100 pounds in 3 weeks???
3500 calories= 1 pound so that's 350,000 calories deprived in 3 weeks.  That would mean she had been eating over 16,000 calories a day.
I didn't think that rapid loss was possible. I've known one person to have GBP and he lost 100 pounds but it was about 3 months

Re: Am I reading this correctly?

  • Maybe she lost some of that weight before the surgery? Because otherwise yeah, that's crazy.
  • And just to be clear, I'm glad for her so I hope this didn't come across as bashing of any sort.  I jsut didn't think it was possible.

  • I had the same sort of "Wait...what??" reaction to that post.  Unless she's also talking about any weight she lost pre-surgery (it's my understanding that you're put on a very strict diet pre-surgery as well) too, but that's still a ton of weight in a very short time and seems odd.

  • If that's correct that is insane.

  • The mom of a friend of mine just lost 30 pounds in about a week.  It was ALL water.  She had some issues and was retaining fluid.  (And definitely could stand to lose another 100+ lbs).

    So perhaps it's mostly water?

  • Maybe she's exercising too?  Since she's absorbing fewer calories, maybe that's how this can work.  I have no idea--I was surprised too!
  • Yeah, I didn't read it as she necessarily lost that since the WLS.  I read it as her highest was 295 and now she's at 195- probably including pre-surgery weight loss.

  • J&K, you look beautiful in that pic!
  • Well, y'all can see from my ticker how much I've lost in 3 weeks.  That's with calorie cutting and no excercise (yet).

That sounds like a crazy amount of weight loss at once.  If she weighed 600 lbs before the surgery, it might make sense, but she should not go from 295 to 195 lbs in 3 weeks.  I hope there's something else to that number.

This is what I think it is too. She is down 100lbs from her highest weight, not just from when she had the surgery.
  • Thanks Money!

Yeah, 100 lbs in 3 weeks, not going to happen. 30 pounds in 3 weeks, more likely.

At 4 months out I could put both legs into one leg of my largest pants. I think I lost 100 pounds in the first 6 months. Then it got slower.

ETA:  I only lost 14 pounds pre-surgery.  I don't  know if all surgeons do the same; mine had me on a super-low (800?) calorie liquid diet for 2 weeks prior. I had to eat a couple of times, and they'd said that was ok.

  • Maybe she had some lipo at the same time?

  • Yes, ma'am. In 2004. I went from 364 to 152. I'd lost to 180 before I separated from my first husband, and got to 160. Moved out here, went back up to 172-175, then went down to 152 and I've stayed here for 2 years.
I've got some loose skin I need to have removed - even if I lipo'ed it, there'd still be skin. Thighs are bad from it, so I don't wear short shorts or skirts.

Here's an early on shot - I was already down a couple of clothing sizes. I think that's a month out. My pre-surgery shot has my mom in it, so I won't post that.

  • Thanks!  I'll tell you what made me decide to do it. My mom and I were standing outside my grandparents' house. Her sister had just gotten approved or had just had the surgery (I don't remember which). Mom said "Missy, I don't want to have to bury you."

It killed me. I called the insurance company, found out I had ALL the comorbidities, would most likely get approved, and met with a surgeon. Had final approval in 3 weeks, surgery was in 4. And after a year had gone by, it gave me enough confidence in myself to realized I'd lost the core of who I was in the "marriage" I was in, and I left. Divorced a year later, but didn't date until that time.
