NWR - House of Leaves - Has anyone else read this?

I'm about halfway through and it's so weird and compelling.

  • It could be the day I'm having, but I looked it up on goodreads and I couldn't even understand what the summary of it was trying to say.

  • An old man dies, he leaves behind a manuscript of a review of a documentary called The Navidson Record.  A guy finds the manuscript and begins editing it to be published, despite not being able to find any records of the documentary even existing, and knowing that most of the quotes and citations in the manuscript are completely fabricated.  The manuscript describes a documentary about a house which is constantly changing and growing on its own.  "House of Leaves" is presented as the edited version of that manuscript, but really it's all fiction.  The way you learn the story behind the guy editing the manuscript is that he progressively gets crazier and crazier as he gets through more and more of the manuscript, and his "footnotes" often are pages and pages long describing panic attacks, one night stands, and past events in his life.  The book is non-standard in presentation to say the very least, with some pages consisting of upside-down and backwards text, lots of blank space with only a few words on a page, stuff like that.

I bought it for $6 at a used bookstore but haven't read it yet. A bunch of my friends are totally obsessed with it though so I think I'll have to make it the next one on my list to read :)

I've read it about three times. It's amazing, one of my absolute favorites. I have a copy signed by Danielewski. Definitely not for everybody, though.

  • I'm very late to this thread, but I used to tell people that books came with a free case of the heebeejeebees. I actually wouldn't read it in my bedroom, only in the common areas of the house I shared with roommates. Creepiest book ever, is what I'm trying to say here.
