christmas baking

This is a bit of a post and run, I have an appointment in a few minutes. BUT. I want to know what you guys do for Xmas baking. I'm doing some this weekend.

In my house:

Lemon Bars
Nanaimo Bars
Meringue Cookies

Re: christmas baking

  • We always do springerles, peanut butter kiss cookies, and frosted sugar cookies.
  • Fudge.  Lots and lots and lots of fudge.
Sugar cookies, the cut out kind.
Egg white cookies (like a meringue, although slightly different consistency) with pecans and mini chocolate chips.
Chocolate cookies with peanut butter chips
    Gingerbread men
Dog biscuits for all our 4 legged friends
  • Growing up we always had:

    Nanaimo bars
    Date squares
    Butter tarts
Shortbread and my mom put those gross green and red cherries in the middle
    Cherry Blossoms (mini cherry cheesecakes)

And I think that's it for what my mom did.  OH and tarte au sucre (sugar pie).  It's kind of like a butter tart.  That kind of sweet and richness, but no raisins or nuts or anything... and shallow filling.  It's not thick like pumpkin pie or anything.  It's a thin pie.  OMG.  Now I want/need one.

  • I love doing peanut butter chocolate chip cookies, pizelles (since I have a pizelle maker now), snickerdoodles, crescent cookies.
  • What heck are pizelles?!

Mandy, have you ever had creme du surcre? YUM YUM IN MY BELLY.

We call it sucre a creme.  ANd yes, OMG SO GOOD.  It's hard to make apparently.  My aunt gave Mike the recipe.  But if you can't get it to harden then you can use it as a drizzle/glaze on a spice cake or something :)

I had some for the first time in years back in October.  I told everyone in the room to shut up so I could enjoy it for a minute.

  • I usually make
Jimmy cookies (oats/powdered sugar based cookies rolled in chocolate sprinkles)
    Mexican Wedding Cakes (no nuts)
Wilton's basic roll-out cookie with confectioner's sugar icing
    Peanut Butter Kisses
    Soft chocolate mints
    Dill Onion Bread
Death By Chocolate cake (it's layered with chocolate buttercream, chocolate ganache, and caramel)

  • Our traditional cookies were:

    White chocolate cherry cookies
    Lemon bars
    Pumpkin bars
    Mincemeat bars
Coconut meringue bars (detecting a theme?)

This year, I'll make the white chocolate cherry and coconut meringue bars, plus peanut butter cookies w/a Hershey's kiss (FI's fave), chocolate crinkle cookies, and sugar cookies (my future stepson's fave).
