Thank you cards for gifts of money

As far as telling the person what you are going to spend the money on, is that really necessary?  If I plan on being honest about it, any money we receive will just be going towards paying for the wedding.   Otherwise I'll be making stuff up.  Thoughts?

Re: Thank you cards for gifts of money

  • In your case, I would probably just say something along the lines of " Dear ___, Thank you so much for coming to my shower (I'm assuming here), and for your generous gift. It was great to see you/We look forward to seeing you at the wedding"
  • It's always good to put some sort of line about how you will be using the gift into a thank you note, to make it feel a little more personal and fill up the space in the card (I know I have small handwriting), but it can be kinda vague if you want.

"Thank you so much for the generous wedding gift. It will be of great use to us as we begin our married life together."

That might be enough. But play with it.

Wouldn't it be nice to live together in the kind of world where we belong?

I would put somthing like "Thank you for the wedding gift,. John and I greatly appriciate it and rest assured your gift  will be put it to good use." ??? ?
  • Ditto Sarah. If you can't mention something specific, at least refer to how it will come in handy as you start your married life together.
  • I wrote some people that we spent it on a splurge during our honeymoon. I wrote some people that we used it to complete our registry. I wrote some people that the $ would come in handy as we started the next phase of our life together. I wrote some people that we'd be using it for home repairs.
Reality - 90% of it was deposited directly to a savings account as we are upside down on our house and will need the cash if/when we manage to sell it.  But we DID splurge on a few items during our honeymoon, and buy some extra stuff off our registry and are currently redoing our basement in preparation to list the house for sale sometime this month. Perception is key, and people like to know that their gifts to you will be useful - so throw them a detail.
