Anyone around? First wedding freak out - HURRICANE

Hurricane Tomas is expected to be a category 3 by the time it hits Jamaica maybe on Friday or Saturday (wedding day).  What the eff should I do? A couple people are due to fly in Friday, I don't want to put friends/family in a dangerous situation being in a foreign country with the possibility of an evacuation.  I want advice but I don't even know what advice to ask for.  Do we go?  Should we stay?  What would you do?  Each time I check the progress of the hurricane it gets more and more powerful.

  • Yikes. Did you book through a TA? Did you get trip insurance? I would maybe call your TA and ask what he/she thinks you should do.

I take it you are getting married in Jamaica. We took our HM there, absolutely loved it and enjoyed every second of it.
  • Oh my goodness! I second calling a travel agent or someone who regularly does this for advice. If the hurricane is that large they may not allow anyone to fly in until it goes away. Is there any chance of moving it back? Hopefully your guests got travel insurance!
  • Whoa.  No advice really but I'm wishing you lots of luck with this.

  • I did book through a TA and I just reached out to him (haven't heard back yet).  Our trip is insured but I'm not sure about everyone else :-(

Where are you staying?   I work for a major hotel chain, when ever there is a hurricane in a location where we have a sister property we make arrangements to have the wedding moved to another property.   This time of year it's not unusual for us to pick up a wedding party from another location because of weather.  Airlines are generally good about switching the tickets,

    Good luck...

ETA - this is if your wedding is being planned from the resort.  If you are on your own in your planning it might not work..

  • I guess this is ONE good thing, the wedding is planned on a resort, RIU Negril.

Call the resort.  They should help you.

I would not be surprised if we now get a pop-up group from our Jamaica property.  We have put together 100+ person weddings in only 2 days from the Caymens a  few years ago because of a hurricane.  It can be done.

Sure it's not what they expected, but at the end of the day the couple and guests had a great time.

BTW - I got married in the middle of a tropical storm, I know what you are feeling.  My advice is go with the flow and try to make the best of if.  Years from now you will be laughing (2 years later it's still the talk of our family).

  • As far as putting them in danger goes, just send out an email with all the info and let them decide for themselves.
  • Pink- We got hurricaned out of our honeymoon. If there is a hurricane, the airline will cancel their flights, and given the circumstances should refund/ voucher them. The resort that we were supposed to go to also refunded all the money. But, yes, contact the resort and see if they can move stuff around, and keep an eye on the hurricane, they can get squirrelly on you. Best of luck though! It's going to be a story no matter what.

  • Listen to Lynda.  And, the airlines will probably allow your guests to change their flights even if they don't have travel insurance, because of the hurricane.  It needs to be addressed asap, but don't panic.

The storm is not expected to hit Jamaica at this time (but of course can change).
