    I would go to the local airport with your friend who can't go on the trip, and your other friend who CAN go (or your mom or whoever) and convince the airline clerk to override the standard computer block on nontransferable ticket to re-ticket it in the name of the person who CAN go.  Will cost about $80 to get the ticket re-run in the new person's name.
