  • I want to fly like an eagle, let my spirit carry me?

"Whatever East. You're just mad I RSVP'd "lame" to your pre-wedding sleepover."
  • Did you ever know that you're my hero,
and everything I would like to be?
I can fly higher than an eagle,
'cause you are the wind beneath my wings...?
  • I should have done that at my wedding. How cool would that have been?

Were they not planning to release the mature bird until they discovered that the younger one couldn't go?
  • Yes. I saw it. I did not like it my H thought it was cool. I bet the little guy was scared!

  • Well I just googled this since apparently I have been living in a hole and it seems like a really unnecessary event.

MY question is... are you READY for the big game tonight??
  • Jesus, man, can you change the channel? I've had a rough night, and I hate the fucking Eagles, man.

  • Michael Vick?

    No idea what is happening...
  • Right? When I say him over there, I was like, oh shiit, they are gonna let that guy fly around during the national anthem, aren't they.

    Sure as shiit.

  • At the Jets game?
  • Yes, and I thought it was lame. Poor eagle was probably annoyed at having to fly around a stadium with 80,000 cheering people.

  • Yes mam. The Jets-Colts game. They let the Bald Eagle out to fly around the stadium during the SSB.

  • What the what?  They released an Eagle before the Jets/Colts game?
  • Oh haha! I missed that. I googled "eagle release" and came up with something much different.
  • That's ricockulous.  Why do we need to have extravaganza's during the national anthem?  It doesn't make us more patriotic, yo's!

Of course, H thought it was cool.  *eye roll*

  • Was it a Bald Eagle?  Because they're super protected and everything, is that even "legal"?

  • I miss yours as well... I'll tell you though, as a Patriots fan it is downright depressing watching the Colts and Jets battle it out right now. Seriously, could there be a worse combo vying for the bowl right now? blaaaah.

I don't think bald eagles are on the endangered species list anymore. Also, there are laws that make it okay for a falconer to train birds of prey, even protected species sometimes. I'm not sure what this entails, but one time I was at a park and there was a falconer there with a red tailed hawk, and that was kinda cool.

Regardless of their endangered status, aren't they protected just b/c they're the national bird?

  • You'd be surprised. They got moved off the endangered list as one of many acts of the Bush Administration's quiet campaign to stomp out all beautiful living things, and a lot of their habitats are being cut down as a result. It's sad, because they were doing really well there for a while, but they'll be back on the list soon.

Incidentally, I hate listening to pop singers or off-key seven year olds sing the national anthem. It should be for awesome choirs only.

  • Actually at opening day for the Cardinals at Busch Stadium every single year they release a bald eagle, I guess since it's Anheuser-Busch's symbol or something. I mean professional bird handlers come do it and it just flies around the stadium once, but I never really thought about it I guess because I was used to it.  Hmm, it is kind of silly now that I think about it. I wonder if they use the same bird several times or a new one each time.

  • Bald Eagles are still protected because they are a national symbol.  There is actually a federal investigation going on in my area b/c a bald eagle was shot. (the eagle lived but won't be able to fly).

That being said Sarah is right that falconers can be granted permission to keep one, typically they are rehabed birds that would never be fit to live in the wild.

I have to say, it would be neat to see a bald eagle soaring around the staduim during the National Anthem!
