S/O: how much was your engagement ring?

The post about judging engagement rings got me curious:  are people willing to share how much their engagement rings cost?  (no judgement here, I'm just wondering what is the norm/average).

Re: S/O: how much was your engagement ring?

  • Mine (sapphire and white gold) was about $150, plus $30 or so to have it resized. We got it online during a clearance. We had no money at the time and I wanted something really small (I hate wearing rings) so it was perfect. We figure we'll get matching wedding bands for our 5 year (my dad had these awesome custom bands designed for his and we want somethign similiar) so after that I probably won't wear it anymore anyway.
  • Our was an heirloom so I wrote $0

It's a 3/4 carat solitaire of high quality on a gold band which I LOVE, but I think is probably an inexpensive/lame ring by a lot of people's standards. I have no idea how much it would have cost.
  • The ring that my BF and I like is in the $5-10K range, but we're still shopping around.
  • My ring was only $800 something, and the wedding band was like $300 something.  The only other ring I was even remotely interested in getting was a completely custom ring with colorless and black diamonds, and that would have been $1800

  • mine was custom and i think it is a little under $4000. I love it soo much. It didn't come with a wedding band. My ring is a lil under a carat the center stone is .5 carats but it nearly perfect.

    This :)

Mine was a little over $2500 and I couldn't be happier!
  • I'm not sure exactly what mine cost, but when FI and I were looking I remember the rough price of the ring without the diamond and it was about $3,500. I'm guessing the total cost of my ring with the diamond was over $5,000.

  • Not sure don't care. But mine was given to FI years ago by his grandfather (who was a jeweler) and then gave it to his grandmother she did use it for some reason or another. So it was put aside for FI to use as an engagement ring  So that means more to me to me then ANY amount of money he would have spent..

  • I just got mine appraised.  They said it was worth a little over 23K.

Center stone is a 2.6 flawless round and there are 75 mini diamonds around it.  Total weight is about 3.5 or so.  Set in white gold.

That doesn't necessarily mean that much.  My appraisal is for ~70% more than FI actually paid for my ring.

  • I know.  The sales slip said 21K.

  • If the sales slip said 21k and it appraised for 23k, that is not a very good deal.  My ring appraised for more than double what we paid for it.  Generally, rings appraise for 50% to 100% more than you pay for them.  Was it a Tiffany ring?

  • Diamonds appreciate, and will always go up in value. A ring that's worth $23K now will be worth more down the road.
  • I know exactly how much mine cost because FI bought it as soon as I picked it out. They then sent it in for resizing and he picked it up a few days later. It cost as much as my first car. (Used car, FYI.) He paid in the $2501-$5000 range, but it's appraised and insured in the $5,000-$10,000 range.

I went to college with a guy who said he would NEVER propose to a girl until he had at least $20,000 for a ring. He was kind of a tool.

  • I don't know how much my ring cost.  My FI insured it himself so I wouldn't find out.  But I have an idea of how much it cost based on its size, clarity, cut, etc.

No its not a Tiffany.  He had it custom made and for the smaller diamonds around the band he wanted actual diamonds not chips so he changed those out.  So maybe he paid more for customization?

Also it was appraised for Retail Replacement Value through the jeweler so maybe thats why.  I need to add it to my homeowners insurance and assume that will require an additional appraisal so I guess I will have to wait for that one.

But, if you ring is appraising for 2-3x what you paid for it, aren't you paying more on your insurance premium for it?

Replacement value is the standard for appraisals.  And you don't have to insure it for the full amount of the appraisal if you don't want to, you could choose to insure it for the amount you actually spent instead, just not more than the appraisal.

  • Mine was about $200, and it makes me so happy that we didn't spend more.

  • Mine set is moissanite. The e-ring was $1200, the wedding band was $800. The two together total 3.5 carats.

Yes, which is a flaw in the whole appraisal/insurance of jewelry system.
