Lamp oil?

We have a....I don't even know what to call it...piece of decor, I guess, that uses oil and wicks and you can light it.

We were using paraffin oil in it, but it was sooty and smoky and we weren't fans.  We bought a good quality oil (the kind the shop recommended) but apparently it wasn't good enough.

Anyone have any recs on a high quality brand of paraffin oil OR an alternative to use that's as smoke/soot/odorless as possible?

Re: Lamp oil?

  • I have no recs, but I wanted to say that I love those kinds of lamps!  My mom has several and I love when she pulls them out.  Her oils are colored and burn clean.  It must exist.  Good luck, JK!
  • Thanks Joy!  We got the stuff with the best reviews on Amazon, and I just don't understand why it's so sooty.  I wonder if the wicks suck.

Google tells me we can burn olive oil.  I'm intrigued.

  • That sounds expensive. I would think it's probably the wick, or an accumulation of dust, etc? Maybe?
  • It's clean, so it's not the dust, but google is also telling me it could be the wick.  It was an expensive piece, so I'd be surprised if they used cheap, crappy wicks, but stranger things have happened!  Wicks are cheap so I think that will be our first step.

  • Yeah, I would just do that as well.
  • That's the kind of oil we used.

We had the wicks in the oil for about an hour, I think.  Maybe it wasn't long enough.  We'll try soaking them for longer.  Thanks for the tip!
