Bargains

took H's car the other night because it was behind mine in the driveway, and I drove a new friend to a meeting we had.  H has a BMW, but he literally only was able to get it because it was used, and he bought it before they did the pre-owned certification on it, which saved thousands.  But the new friend kept going on and on about not believing she was in a BMW, and when I told her the only way he had it, she said, "don't admit that to people."  Ummm, I love a bargain, and I'd rather admit that we got an amazing deal than have people think we can afford it.

Sooo, it got met thinking...

Whats the best bargain you've ever gotten?

Would have bought the item if not for the deal?

Do you admit to people that you got the bargain, or let them think you can afford it?

Re: Bargains

  • My car. Not that it would have been outrageously expensive new, but I found the exact one I would have special ordered used with only 9K miles on it for a fraction of the price, and then the dealership guy got me a 5 year bumper to bumper warranty for dirt cheap. It was ridiculous. I literally just stopped in to the dealership to see what they had and left with a new car.

  • Thats awesome.  I had a leased Jeep before this one, and had to get out of my lease before moving.  I was able to buy the same Jeep brand new with no miles for only $30 more a month than it would have been to buy out my lease with 34,000 miles on it.  I love getting car deals.

  • I find a lot of great things on ebay. My biggest bargain was probably a St. John tweed skirt that I got for $5 + shipping.

I don't even want to know what that would cost IRL. Too much for me. I'm open about my bargain buys because I don't have that kind of money and don't want people to think I'm doing something sketchy.
  • I don't know about THE best bargain I've ever gotten, but a few that I've liked recently were:

    - Lia Sophia jewelry on ebay
    - 50 table runners for $40 from a local knottie
    - A Groupon the other day that I bought where I got $46 worth of stuff at a winery for $20

Chump change, I know but I was still pretty happy :)
  • I would say my car. We got it with $0 down and it was previously owned by a business so it was very well taken care of. The payments and teh interest is super low on it.  Plus it has leather and I always though if you had leather you were rich ! LOL

I guess my flowers was a good deal too.. I got a buttload of bougets and bouts for $700 and they are gorgeous

  • I got my Kate Spade purse for $40 at an outlet. In a color I had been admiring for literally 3-4 years.

I also got a skirt at Old Navy for $1.97 once and got a lot of wear out of it.

Nice deal! I left my sunglasses on a restaurant table while drunk on my HM, so I had to go buy a cheapo pair at the grocery store. I don't really like them.

Oh, PS, I just read a money article where the author said his GF bought a 1 year old beemer for 10k less than the cost of a new car. So yeah, totally something to be proud of!

  • Yeah its funny because people tell me i'm ridiculous to spend that much money  on sunglasses (um, they were free), because they break so easily.  And I usually am horrible with sunglasses and will throw them on my car seat or randomly in my purse so they get ruined or forget them places.  But I take such good care of these, always keeping them in the case, that i would actually consider paying for a pair if/when I need a new pair.

Glad to know about the car!  I think its funny too because his car is seen as like a status symbol or whatever, and my Jeep actually cost more.  Guess I'm just not as good of a shopper!

  • It would actually make me feel good if you told me about the sweet car deal. Like I could afford one, too! Plus, I have no problem getting a quality item. That BMW will last for 15-20 years if you really want it to. :-)

  • Oh yeah, and he seriously babies it to no end.  I think he ended up paying $24 for it.  It had just been turned in so it didn't get to the certification process yet.  So they had to certify it for him and did any repairs for free, including new tires which  saved him about $3k there.  I think they told him it would have been stickered at about $30k if it was pre-owned certified before he bought it.
