STD's...When is a good time to send them out?

We are just about at our 12 month mark and im starting to look for some Save the dates. When is proper etiquette to send them out? Any cute ideas for a STD?

We sent ours out 9 months before the wedding.

We sent ours at 8 months out.

Generally, guests (in town and out) should receive a Save the Date no later than 6 months and no earlier than 9 months.

Ours went out in September/October for an April wedding, so what's that... 5 or 6 months?

NYU is right that anyone who gets a STD needs an invitation, and often it's hard to finalize your guest list even 6 months out. Ours wasn't truly final until we sent invitations. We just sent STDs to family and close friends, but in doing so, there was definitely overlap with a few "acquaintances" who were on our list but wasn't sure about inviting so they didn't get an STD but people they knew did because they were closer to us. So, it could have appeared that they weren't invited and they may have been surprised or felt B-listed when they ended up receiving invitations. They weren't B-listed, and I have no idea if anyone really felt that way or my system worked, but if I had to re-do it, I'd probably avoid STDs or just have limited it to family or something like that.

NYU's second sentence makes no sense. As long as you assume everyone getting an STD gets an invitation, I don't see why you're potentially having to add 25% to your numbers.

We sent ours out about 11 months in advance... but this is mainly because FI family all lives in quebec and they needed a ton of notice to see if they would be able to financially swing a trip to the states... I am so glad we did because they are all coming! YAY CANADIANS!!! (i hope they bring poutine! lol) plus we are having our wedding in a central location between new york, new jersey , ct and massachusettes so we wanted everyone to be able to book a hotel room... to our surprise our hotel room is already almost booked completely so im so glad we did the room block and bookings early! We only have 4 rooms left on the block!

but if these arent your circumstances 9-10 months is more than sufficient.

Getting ready to drop mine in the mail tomorrow.  We just hit the 8 month mark, and just about everybody in my family will be coming from out of state.
