What do you think of this statement?

Someone I know posted this on my status about Haiti relief on FB.

"Yes, really! I just had a 2 day arguement about this! And to get people over it I am making an offer "shut up about it, wanna help? Leave your life right now and I will pay for you to flý there and I will send you care packages" keep american $$ in america! Keep americans (troops) in america! Do you even half @$$ think they would EVEN give 2 thoughts about us if that happened here? And NO its not about being "humane" nature prevails!! Survival of the fittest!"

I understand that people want to keep American dollars in America, I do. We're in a financial crisis as a country, so I understand that, but it's the survival of the fittest comment that irks me.

In the most non-political way possible, what do you think about the survival of the fittest comment? Do you think that the right thing to do as humans is to help the other humans that are suffering?

Re: What do you think of this statement?

  • Im unemployed and we dont have a lot of money, but I have a roof over my head and the ability to get food. The people in haiti dont have that. Even if I did give them all of my money, ive still got more, and that makes me feel even more obligated to send my money in that direction. I feel we have an obligation as decent human beings to help out people who are in need, survival of the fittest be damned. That persons views are SERIOUSLY, seriously screwed up.
  • I think that person is a vile human being.
  • I think survival of the fittest applies when it comes to someone being dumb and getting injured/killed, not when it comes to a major natural disaster.  The Hatians didn't cause the earthquake, so survival of the fittest does not apply.  You could be the strongest, smartest, most evolved perosn in the world but if a huge building comes down on your head, you're going to be severely injured, or killed.

And betrothed, I'm disgusted with most of the comments that you have posted. I don't think I've ever read such judgmental comments in my life. I'm so lucky that the girls I speak to on theknot are nothing like you...I would've never come on here for ADVICE if I would've encountered a big a bitch as you. I genuinely feel awful for your children or your future children, and I think it would be irresponsible of YOU not to invest in their future therapy sessions starting now. Because trust me when I tell you honey, they're gonna need it. ~jcaruncho2010

  • Normally, I'm a proponent of survival of the fittest (to an extent, of course).  But I just don't see how a country like ours could possibly sit and watch in a situation like Haiti's and do nothing.  So I guess I'm a hypocrite, but it hurts me that people want to let Haiti pretty much self destruct because they don't have the resources and knowledge.
  • I think that person is a joke. And I think he/she/it suffers from supreme self-importance when in fact, he/she/it only came across as one of the dumbest fvcks I've ever encountered. I'd smack he/she/it with a big stick.

  • I think that if someone lacks any of the basic life needs (food, clothing, shelter), especially due to something they had no control over, than it is a must as a speces for us to provide what we can to help.

  • The US should help any way it and its citizens can. I donated money to the Red Cross. Not a ton, but enough so that I can sleep at night.

Although, the US government screwed over a lot of New Orleans residents after Katrina and that whole deal was fucked from the top down. What makes the US think it can help a foreign country in any significant way (I don't mean monetary donations) when it can't properly handle the natural disasters within its own borders?

  • I just needed some validation or something. To see what the general view is.

This guy is already someone who's ignorant and arrogant, and he added me on FB so I was nice and added him back---we went to HS together, he dated my BFF before he was like this...etc.

The other day, my friend said that she wasn't going to post her bra color to support breast cancer, that she could support it without posting her bra color, and he said,

"Well, if you don't like it ignore it, but when you feel you need support don't look to them to back you!"

Because she didn't post her bra color, her friends aren't going to support her if she gets breast cancer?

    He's an ass.

  • Actually, it did happen in the US.  Remember that little hurricane y'all had that wiped out large cities?  You know the one, what was the name again... riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight... Katrina.

I'd like to give your friend a BIG Fuuck you from Canada.  Thanks.

  • Wait, so he thinks a woman who wouldn't post her bra color shouldn't look for support if she got breast cancer, but he feels we shouldn't help victims of a natural disaster?
Yeah, me thinks this guy is an idiot and needs to smacked upside his thick head.
"Survival of the fittest" doesn't apply to natural disaster.s

Part of being a good human being is caring for others and lending the assitance that others need to bring them up with you.  That is human survival of the fittest.  That's how we've gotten to be the dominant species on the planet.  Tribes that had more helped tribes that had less.  That concept still applies, and in his case he is NOT the fittest, and he should not survive.  Assss.
  • Sigh, people make me sad sometimes.  Right up there with Robertson saying it was because they made a pact with the devil.  So ignorant!
  • that's horrible. coming from Miami, where there is a large Haitian community, you can't say sh!t like that. These are PEOPLE. they are people's families, friends,  kids... that person needs a swift kick in the ass. 50000 people dying is not something to make light of
  • It's easy to talk about survival of the fittest when you're born into a world with running water, a roof over your head, and opportunities abound. I'm willing to bet that this guy doesn't know the first thing about REAL "survival".

    Horrible. Just horrible.

  • I think this guy is a sociopath.  Seriously.  You have to have a mental defect to be this unfeeling.

Isn't that the same argument that "we" used for Manifest Destiny to kick out all the Native Americans?  We're fitter, we have guns, go get smallpox and die!
  • That person is an idiot. I doubt he would survive as the fittest.

  • Know what you should post as a comment;

"Congratulations on winning the award for sh!ttiest human being ever. Oh, and also, superme idiocy does not correlate with being "the fittest" so good luck winning that competition moron."

But I tend to be an outspoken b!tch when I get riled... ;)

  • This guy has probably never left his ivory palace to see how the rest of the world lives.  If he had been to Haiti (or any other developing country), he might have more compassion.  I believe that it is our responsibility as humans to respond to poverty in this world regardless of where we live.  I have a really hard time after visiting some of these countries to return to the U.S. and the comforts of our home.  To be able to turn on a faucet and be able to drink the water that flows from it is a huge privilege when most of the rest of the world cannot drink that water even if they have access to a faucet.

Anybody that looks at what is happening in Haiti and does nothing should be ashamed of themselves.

  • I haven't read the other responses, but when Katrina happened, other countries sent aid to the US as well.  In this instance, I totally don't see how it's possible to chalk this up to survival of the fittest.

  • The person who posted that on your status is disgusting.  If I weren't a better person with a strong fear of karma, I'd wish a little earthquake aftershock on them and their home and loved ones for a wake up call.

Personally, I don't let people bully their political opinions on me using my FB wall.  whenever people post aggressive things like that I respond to keep their opinions to their own walls, and typically block or delete them.

I definitely wouldn't want to associate with someone as heartless as that.
