New York Marathon has been called off for Sunday

Thankfully, Mayor Bloomberg just said it could be postponed although he has been holding fast that it was totally acceptable to divert thousands of police, fire and emergency personnel.  And half the city is still out of water & power

oops. power was just restored in lower Manhattan.  Staten Island is still without anything and that's where the marathon starts.

I'm glad he saw the light and now knows what a real problem is.  HIS home still has everything standing.  Including the servants

btw, this has been a huge debate all over the east coast

I thought they should cancel or postpone it. I realize that A LOT goes into planning this and if I was planning to run I would be disappointed but there are just so many people that need so much from the city right now I can't believe this was a good idea. Though I appreciate some of the intentions (morale, etc.) I think they were overlooking bigger issues. Or at the very least, see if re-routing to more stable/less affected areas was a possibility, though I realize that could be a logistical nightmare, especially this late in the game.

ETA: Bloomberg is also insisting that the marathon would NOT divert resources from the recovery effort, but it's not that those resources would be diverted, it's that if those people are available to be doing something on Sunday, they should maybe spend their time on the cleanup.

ETA a second time because I realized my ETA had a lot of mistakes.
  • hmm, I think the numbers protesting worked.

Now the announcments are saying cancelled.  IMO, no one will die if we don't have a marathon for one year.
  • Good. It was ridiculous that they were even considering it. I read somewhere that a compromise would have been to have them do laps around Central Park, as that was the original route before it encompassed the whole city. Central Park sustained a lot of damage, though. Personally, I prefer just not having it at all. It's not like 9/11, when there was about two months of recovery before the marathon. This is trying to make it happen in less than a week. Impossible and I'm glad the mayor finally took his head out of his ass and realized it. We have friends without homes, without power, without heat, afraid to leave their houses (if they have one) because of the lawlessness that is taking over in some areas- holding a marathon now would have been the absolute wrong move.

  • I read in an article that one runner who had already made the trip to NYC was going to stay and help with the clean up. I thought that was a great idea and I hope it catches on, since there are probably a lot of runners already in the city.

I agree. If I had already flew out to NYC for the marathon, I would stick around and try to help. I also heard people encourage marathoners who booked hotel rooms but now wouldn't need them/make the trip to donate those rooms to people needing a place to stay for a couple nights. I thought that was a good idea too, especially if you already paid for a room anyway.

  • IMO, Bloomberg should have never said the marathon was still on (I'm a huge Bloomberg fan since we both share the same alma mater), and it was a huge mistake to say it was.  I'm a marathon runner and train with a lot of people who have been planning to run the NYC marathon this weekend (and training for it for 4-6 months), and I feel awful that it's not going to happen.  I don't think that it should have ever been confirmed as still on, and Bloomberg made a huge mistake saying it was still on.  People have paid significant amounts of money to travel for this race, and many have non-refundable plane tickets.

You can never get back that training time.  I feel 100% awful for those who have lost property, or even worse, friends or family, in this horrible tradegy.  But I also can't imagine telling people that this race was still on, and having people travel for it, when they've spent hundreds of hours pounding the pavement to get ready for this race.  It's a no win situation, I'm just disappointed that anyone would stll say it was on, and that I have friends who made the trip up this morning to run it.  But, cancelling was the right thing to do.

</div><div>I'm also a marathon runner, so I'm like you--I see that it's a huge HUGE disappointment (seriously, I ran something like 700 miles over 4/5 months training for my first marathon), but there was no way this would be a success. </div><div>
</div><div>Runners probably won't see a refund on their fees, but they CAN donate their unused rooms: <a href="http://www.good.is/posts/can-t-get-to-nyc-to-run-the-marathon-donate-your-hotel-room-to-sandy-victims" rel="nofollow">http://www.good.is/posts/can-t-get-to-nyc-to-run-the-marathon-donate-your-hotel-room-to-sandy-victims</a></div><div>
</div><div>And many, many races, including the one I'm running in next week (Marshall Marathon in Huntington, WV) are honoring NYC Marathon entries or at least offering discounted rates to those runners. That training doesn't have to go to waste. It's not the same. I get that. But it's SOMETHING.

<div>That's pretty cool other races are honoring NYC Marathon entries--you're right, NYC NEVER would have been a success.  I guess I'm just irritated at the NYC public officials for making a real boneheaded decision earlier this week when they said the race was still on.</div>

600 blankets and 10,000 cases of water meant for the marathon were donated to hurricane victims.  That alone makes cancelling the marathon worth it.
