Encouragement Gifts

Good Morning Ladies, part-time lurker here, but I found something I absolutely had to share.

As I was reading my morning paper I stumbled across this little gem in Carolyn Hax' advice column.

http://www.dallasnews.com/lifestyles/columnists/carolyn-hax/20110422-since-when-does-a-bride-need-encouragement-.ece

I have never heard of an "Encouragement Gift" for a bride before, or being assigned to give several.

I have to agree with both the writer & Carolyn that frankly it sounds awful and I hope the actual Bride had nothing to do with it.

Has anyone ever heard of this before?

Well, clearly getting married is a terrible thing, so we all need to be encouraged to do it.

Wouldn't it be nice to live together in the kind of world where we belong?
  • That's crazy.  I bet it's just an over-involved MOH behind it.

  • I don't think it's an isolated incident though. I've seen "Encouragement for the Bride" cards in places like Target.

Really? That is frightening if there is a whole niche for 'Bridal Encouragement'

I swear I'm imagining an "It Get's Better" video for Brides at the moment.

  • I totally agree with the columist!!! She is marrying the love of her life with a party. Why does she need encouraging?!?!

    This boggles my mind.

Well I feel gypped.  I only got a wedding with 200 people, 3 showers, and a bachelorette party.  My family and friends obviously don't support my marriage.

  • Maybe another way for the wedding industry to suck more money out of people?  I don't know, though, I feel like we would've heard about this in the bridal magazines or something.
  • I work PT in a card store, and in the wedding section, there's several "encouragement for the bride" cards, and they're generally cards that tell the bride "don't forget tot ake time to stop and smell the roses" and "relax, the big day is almost here" etc.  When we first got them I was like, wtf, are these really necessary?  I don't think we have ever sold any.

haha exactly!! I had 2 showers, NO BM drama whatsoever, generous BMs that actually gave me a little help when I needed some as well as generous gifts, 1 b-party, & 100 people @ my wedding!
