I am a bad christmas gifter...

I just came in to work to find that my coworker had bought me a christmas mug, chocolates and a book.

I feel terrible now because up until this year we've always just exchanged cards, and that's all I have for her today, on our last day before christmas. I told her that there's something I wanted to buy for her but didn't find and would have to search for it over the holidays to get for her- I'm sure she saw right through that story though, and I feel terrible.

I'm sure I'm not the only one who has done this before, so tell me your own stories of mismatched gifts to make me feel less cruel.

  • Well not so much me, but we had a "white elephant" exchange last week, and apparently everyone's ideas of white elephant were different.

Most people spent 10 bucks on a cute little gift. Except one person who brought a really shitty used gift. Which I think makes white elephants more interesting, but she was mortified.

  • Last year, MIL, DH's grandmother, and his aunt and uncle got us Christmas gifts and we had nothing for them. Not even a card. DH had told me not to worry about giving gifts because they weren't big on Christmas gifts, but it turns out that they are. I felt like complete shiit. I sat there opening the gifts just looking down at the ground.

Thankfully, I spoke with him and we ARE getting them small gifts this year.

  • My bos got me a gift the first year I was here. He gave me and my coworker stuff. But my coworker was his SIL. I have not bought any gifts for any coworkers, so call me a bad gifter. I know I am. Unfortunately I'm marrying into a family where people spend a LOT of time and energy giving gifts. Most of which are unabashedly returned for what the person really wants anyway. So we include gift receipts.

  • I feel a little less stingy now... especially because our other co-worker didn't bring in gifts either (she said that she had forgot to wrap them thus left them at home), despite my colleague giving her a cute pair of earrings.
  • Ok, damnit, I take that back: said coworker just came in with our presents, unwrapped- they were in her car. She apologised for lack of wrapping and gave me a cute pair of earrings... and again, I only had a card for her (which was the same as the one I gave my first colleague... ouch).

    I am terrible!
  • Hey, a card is better than nothing. And if you are terrible, then I am worse since I didn't even get the ILs cards OR gifts last year!

  • I think I've posted about this before, but my sister is a notoriously awesome, thoughtful gift giver. I, on the other hand, am not. I am just not creative at all.

My dad's second wife was a minister. Her religion was a huge part of her life. My sister had traveled to Jordan that year on business and bought her Holy Water. When she opened my sister's gift, she cried. She even saved the water and used it to Christen my half brother a few years later. You want to know what amazing gift I followed with? A Chia herb garden. Yep. I'm an asshole.
