I'm not sure this question has been asked already and if so sorry.

When should invitations be sent out? My mom says at least 3 months before the wedding. I really hope that is enough time as I dont want my dad's snobby side of the family knowing that I'm getting married way before the time. Dont even plan to announce that I'm engaged.

6-8 weeks before the wedding.

3 months is standard. We sent ours out at 4 months because we didn't do save the date cards.

6-8 weeks is stardard.     Up to 10 weeks if it's OOT.   More the 3 months is too far out.

Instead of just thinking about how far it is before the wedding you might also want to consider when you need numbers for all your vendors.

I plan on sending mine out about 6 weeks before the RSVP date, which is about 1 week before I need numbers for the caterer, which is about 2 weeks before the wedding. So all in all, about 9 weeks beforehand.

Thank you so much for all of your replies. 

Most people live less than a hour away. Few will be flying in and I will be sure to give them adequate notice.

we sent ours out about 8 weeks ahead.  we did not do save the dates, but we did email the few people we knew would have to make hotel/flight arrangements as soon as we had our date set.

6-8 weeks.  We sent our out a little earlier because our wedding was during the winter holidays and we wanted to give people plenty of notice due to Christmas parties and things.  Plus, I was a little worried that holiday mail would slow things down.
