Invitations

I'm not sure this question has been asked already and if so sorry.
When should invitations be sent out? My mom says at least 3 months before the wedding. I really hope that is enough time as I dont want my dad's snobby side of the family knowing that I'm getting married way before the time. Dont even plan to announce that I'm engaged.

Re: Invitations

  • 6-8 weeks before the wedding.

  • 3 months is standard. We sent ours out at 4 months because we didn't do save the date cards.

  • 6-8 weeks is stardard.     Up to 10 weeks if it's OOT.   More the 3 months is too far out.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • Instead of just thinking about how far it is before the wedding you might also want to consider when you need numbers for all your vendors.

I plan on sending mine out about 6 weeks before the RSVP date, which is about 1 week before I need numbers for the caterer, which is about 2 weeks before the wedding. So all in all, about 9 weeks beforehand.
  • Thank you so much for all of your replies.
Most people live less than a hour away. Few will be flying in and I will be sure to give them adequate notice.
    your advice really helped

  • we sent ours out about 8 weeks ahead.  we did not do save the dates, but we did email the few people we knew would have to make hotel/flight arrangements as soon as we had our date set.
  • 6-8 weeks.  We sent our out a little earlier because our wedding was during the winter holidays and we wanted to give people plenty of notice due to Christmas parties and things.  Plus, I was a little worried that holiday mail would slow things down.
