Anyone live in/visited San Antonio?

I'm going to be there july 9th-13th! I'm so excited!

I know we're going to see the alamo and the riverwalk, but I'm not sure what else. Any suggestions? Breakfast and lunch is provided, but we'll need to figure out dinner for 3 nights.

For my teacher friends, we're attending the Dinah Zike Middle School/High School Cross Curricular Notebook Foldables for DIfferentiation Academy. It's gonna be awesome!!

Re: Anyone live in/visited San Antonio?

  • I used to live there and have plenty of family that still does. FI and I even spent this past Thanksgiving in good ol' SA-town. Will you be staying down near the Riverwalk? There's plenty to eat in the area, all within absolutely adorable walking distance (San Antonio is beautiful) but to eat on the Riverwalk can get really pricey and I'm not entirely sure of your budget.

Will you be renting a car or anything? There's such phenomenal barbecue and Tex-Mex joints around town that are worth checking out.

<div>We are renting a car. We're technically staying in comfort, since that's where the academy is, so we want to drive into san antonio at least two nights.</div>

  • You're coming to Texas?! That's so exciting!

San Antonio is fun. I think that the Alamo, the Mexican market & the Riverwalk are the big things to do.

Don't forget that it's already in the 100s here, so while that's only 3 things, believe me, the heat wears you out.

Make sure you ride the boat down the river. It's so much fun! And the restaurant on the Riverwalk with the colorful umbrellas is delicious!

<div>Hi gorgeous! Too bad I'm not closer to you :( Lady, TN is getting some serious heat right now too! Riverwalk is definitely on the list.</div>

  • The heat is horrible, but I'm probably extra whiney about it since I'm a special pregnant snowflake and I've chosen to completely avoid the elements as much as possible.

<div>Oh yeah, I'm sure your body temp is up a lot more than non pregnant ladies!</div>

  • I get hot shockingly fast.

Since it's so hot, I have made a summer-long commitment to my air conditioner to never leave it. :)

</div><div>Comfort is even cuter. What a great little getaway.</div><div>
</div><div>Seconded to the colorful umbrella Mexican restaurant with their massive margaritas on the river - as well as the boat ride! II'd suggest a night ride around the downtown area with the buggies that wait just outside of the Alamo - it might be a bit hot during the day, so I don't know how comfortable you'll feel about all of that. Avoid The County Line... the food is medicore at best, despite its pretty clutch location. </div><div>
</div><div>Rudy's BBQ is absolutely amazing. Its a must-have whenever I go home... usually my family is nice enough to have a massive platter waiting for me upon arrival.  They have locations all over (San Antonio is big on chains), so I'm not sure if you've popped into one before. If you haven't, be sure to grab bottles of that sauce on your way out - you'll have a hankering for it, often. Two Bros. is an excellent spot to grab some barbecue, as well, by the way.</div><div>
</div><div>Freetail Brewing Co. off the Loop is a fun place to hang out. They have such a wide range of brews and yummy pub grub and its hardly a secret in San Antonio. After five o'clock, it turns into a really social atmosphere with lots of people sitting around, laughing, and drinking. I always like to experience the sort of everyday local life of places I go to and this would be one of those places to get that.</div><div>
</div><div>Also, don't hesitate to dip into some local wines (I can't rave about Becker Vineyards enough - its a shame you won't have time to do a day in wine country but at least the local creations can be found on most menus and in the grocery stores). </div><div>

<div>Thank you so much for your help! Yes, we scored a room at HoleKamp house and I'm so excited. Originally we were going to have to stay at the Hampton in Boerne but found ONE room with a double bed, so it worked out perfectly.</div><div>
</div><div>I appreciate your suggestions! I never need a reason to dip into wines ;)</div>

<div>You lucked out. My family lives near the Hampton in Boerne and there really is zero to do there and nothing but trees to look at. Except Boerne does have this really nice restaurant that serves Coppola's little Sofia mini cans of sparkling wine... its delicious, they're pretty hard to find and, come on, a can with a plastic straw attached to the back of it - that's classy. If I remember the name, I'll let you know!</div>
  • Try and see some of the missions while you're down there!
  • We moved to SA in January and there's so much to do, I really love it here. I do suggest some serious sunscreen if you're going to be on the Riverwalk. I also think the Mexican Market and the boat ride are great ideas. If you wanted to have a really nice romantic dinner on the Riverwalk I highly suggest Bella on the River. We went for FI's bday and it was absolutely perfect. A little pricey but very intimate and the service was great. I also recommend a little restaurant called Taco Haven, they have awesome puffy tacos.

  • I love San antonio!

FI and I have visited there at least a dozen times.  We love going there.

We rarely eat on the riverwalk unless we have lots of money.  The only good restaurants there are really expensive... the less expensive restaurants are really touristy and mediocre.

It's still nice to sit there and have drinks, chips/salsa though if you have the time.  The riverwalk is so romantic!

We do like to visit El Mercado (the mexican market), and they have an awesome mexican restaurant there, La Margarita!  It's our favorite.

But I also LOVE Rosario's, located just a few blocks from the riverwalk (I'd probably drive, not walk there).  Great Mexican food and really cool artistic decor.

It depends upon what you like, but when we go we like to visit the mall/movie theater/imax, the historic churches downtown, the missions (you have to drive to the missions), and the art museum.  The art museum is really nice and it's free after 4pm on Tuesdays.  You can also buy a ticket for the rivertaxi, and it takes you all up and down the river all day, all the way up to the art museum.

    Have fun!

  • So much great information :) Y'all are better than tourist sites! Thanks y'all!

  • I love San Antonio.  Personally, I'd avoid eating at Riverwalk, because it's overpriced.  If you need a cool bar, there's a place called Barmacy (and it looks like an old-school Pharmacy) that's pretty neat.  They only serve wine and beer, so be forewarned.
  • Drive to New Braunfels if you can and visit Schlitterbahn!  My sister lives there and I am never there when Schlitterbahn is open and it just seems awesome.  Tubing's great, too, if you can go.  I'll second Rosario's; I don't know if they still haave a Rosario's in the airport but I was so geeked the last time I was there and they had one.

The Riverwalk boat ride is pretty cool, but yeah, avoid the restaurants.  My parents LOVE them but when I went on my own I didn't go.  The SA Zoo is nice, too!
