Do guests really lose all intelligence at weddings?

This is just an observation made from reading various posts but it seems that people who normally would have some semblance of intelligence any other day of their lives are automatically expected to be dumb as a rock at a wedding and not have any clue what is going on. Hence all the poems, signage, etc explaining how to do something or where something is located, what something is for, and so on. Does this actually happen in real life or are these folks just paranoid who think their guests won't know what is going on otherwise, even though they may be highly intelligent in their everyday lives?

  • Who says everyone is highly intelligent?
    my read shelf:

  • My guests did not. They all seemed to be able to dress themselves and not bring children w/o me spelling it out to them.

Guests that do these things are just rude and they "get it" they just don't give a f*ck.

  • I have long been of the opinion that the majority of people are pretty much morons.
Why else would we have reality tv?

I think a lot of people use the signs, etc. that you're referring to as decor opportunities.
  • Definitely provide a bathroom basket. Because those dumb guests definitely won't bring their own tampons and they'll be needing stain sticks and safety pins galore. A 3 hour reception is pretty much just like being trapped on a deserted island.
  • Erm... can you repeat the question?

<div>Actually, we had a bathroom basket and it was pretty much raided by the end of the night...  So I guess someone found it useful ;)</div>
  • I'm providing fancy bibs for all of my guests. For all of the drool.
  • We didn't use poems.  I hired Vanna White to stand and point at the pretty stuff.

  • I have a friend who is planning for when, not if, 2 of her guests go bsc on her.

LOL! Though I am with Expat on this. I had a bathroom basket and all the stuff had been taken/used by the end of the night. They even took the combs, and my friend was grateful for the Motrin for her raging headache. I personally always carry stuff like that with me, but not everyone does (or it won't fit into formal clutches).

  • Bathroom baskets are useful. I've seen tons of women show up to a wedding with an itty bitty little purse and then get her period early, or rip a strap on her dress, or spill red wine on a nice blouse... that kind of stuff happens at a party. I personally carry a lot of emergency stuff in my big huge ridiculous commuter bag, but I would never bring it to a wedding.

Also signs can be helpful, finding a bathroom is not always easy and some people are nervous to ask.

But mostly it's extra decoration. If you send your guests an outlined, detailed list of dos and donts for the day.. you've gone too far.
