Techie question

I'm subbing in a school today that is doing testing so I was told I could bring my laptop or a book to pass the time. I brought my laptop, and when I try to connect to the wireless, it says limited or no connectivity despite having 4 bars. Any ideas how to fix this? I haven't called the office so as not to disturb the kids (the speakers are in the ceiling, so it would disrupt the whole class) but I probably won't anyway, I've got a book.

Re: Techie question

  • It really depends on the wireless hookup.  Did you restart it after you came into the building so your computer could map?

  • Go to your network and sharing center, and you should see a computer, with a blue line connecting to some sort of icon, a house, a building,a bench, something like that, and then a blue line connecting to the world.

If the blue line has an X on it, click it, and it will repair it.

I know this is how it works in Vista and Windows 7. I don't know about XP.
  • I'll restart then try your suggestion jess, though I do have XP.

  • If my memory serves me correctly, on XP you'll see a computer connecting to something---and it'll tell you what the speed is. I think that right clicking it will allow you to repair it, or possibly there's a button.

I haven't had an XP computer since 2007. I'm rusty.
  • If I click repair, it just says windows could not finish repairing the problem because the following action cannot be completed: Renewing your IP address. Boo.

  • If DH were here I'd ask him. I know that he knows the solution to your problem. :(
  • Thanks for trying! I'm going to be at this school A LOT so if you could still ask him, that would be great. Or I will ask the school at some point. This is the school that's hired me to teach, so I really need internet access.

  • DH says:

Go to your start bar, and go to RUN, type in CMD and hit enter. Once you get there, he says type in IPCONFIG /RENEW (there's a space between IPCONFIG and the backslash.)

Hit enter, and he says that should help. Let me know if that works.
  • If you're connecting to the wireless fine but not getting on to the internet, my guess is that the problem is not with the wireless. There might be some sort of additional security on the school's network that you don't know about - maybe you need to navigate to a certain page to register your computer before you can do anything else, or something like that. It would probably be good to talk to the school tech support when you get a break from proctoring to see what might be going on.

  • It probably won't work because they don't let unauthorized computers connect to their wireless.  My school does the same thing.  You need a password and a tech person to set it up.

  • Sucrets, I was worried that might be the issue, but in subbed at tons of schools and never had an issue. Jess, still the same error. Might just be the issue sucrets mentioned. I'll talk to the office when school is out.

  • At my school you have to have a network profile set up and permissions created and basically you can't get on from your own computer unless the network god decides you can.
Heck, half the time our cord connected teacher's computers can't find the stupid network. I love Loudoun County but they were a littttle over-ambitious with their District Wide Network.
