Political makeup of the board

It strikes me as strange that whenever there are political threads there only seems to be one side represented.  Is there a reason the boards are so liberal?  There seem to be a large variety of people on here, so why not in that area?  Are people afraid to disagree?  Are we really that one sided?  Any thoughts?

There are definitely non liberals here. I think for the majority though people in general tend to be more liberal. I'm not afraid to disagree I just don't like debating politics.

I'm conservative. I don't find this board to be a satisfactory venue for political discussions, for my tastes, at least.

In general, the US (where most of the brides here seem to be from) are mostly liberal, hence why the more liberal president (more liberal compared to McCain) got the majority of the votes. That is how democracy works.
Now, of course, depending on what part of the country you're in, there are going to be either more conservative people or more liberal people. BUT, when it is a country wide forum, like The Knot, the scales are going to be tipped to the liberal side. Back in 2004-2005, this forum was probably more conservative.

The UK just voted in a conservative PM, but, again, the majority of the people here are from the US, so the Brits here aren't enough in numbers to tip the scale.

Haha I didn't even think about that. I just thought I knew who most of the republicans are but I'm pretty sure now, thinking about it, that theres a lot more than I realize. I'm a republican

I have to agree with TJ. Every time we have a political thread on this board, everyone goes in circles (including myself) trying to prove how right their political party is. Bleh.

It was a question I had been wondering for a while.  There was a week of political things a while back that seemed to be one sided, mostly on social issues.  At the time it seemed that it was just how things were, but other things lately that made me wonder if there were more socially conservative people around and why they didn't talk when the thread was explicitly political.  

I suppose I find that there are political ideas in non political threads.  Also, I was board, so wanted to know what others thought.  

Its interesting that people don't think its liberal around here.  Maybe living in Utah changes what I think of as center, but I'm not used to groups being as pro choice, or pro gay rights as they are here.  Its more like being in college again.

I'm a middle-of-the-road Republican.  I don't comment because I don't enjoy debating politics.  And I often pop in and out of the boards and can't stick around to participate in a long discussion in a meaningful way.

I'm a big pinko commie, and am very upset that my politican party is so under represented on this board.  CONSPIRACY, PEOPLE.

Honestly though, I think there are a lot of conservatives and republicans on this board, but I think that the dems and liberals are just more vocal and outspoken.

However, I'll just quote Lewis Black: "[Democrats and Republicans] are like two big bowls of sh!t. The only difference is the smell." FWIW, I tend to lean more toward liberal viewpoints.

This board has a much more varied political makeup than many boards I've been to. I also think people have differing views on many issues, not just the party line. For example, someone might be conservative on immigration. Or fiscally conservative but pro-gay marriage.

In addition, there are many people from outside the US who post on this board. And while other countries tend to have more liberal political parties, that's also a political variation that's nice to see.

It would be interesting to see how it changed over time.  I will say that my conservative friends are still conservative, and were when Bush was in power, and my liberal friends were liberal then and still are.  Few people changed their minds, but maybe the board is large enough that it would make a difference.

I guess where I live, I'm not used to people NOT being pro choice or pro gay rights.  (Denver, specifically, not Colorado as a whole which is conservative).

This times a million.  I honestly don't think "conservative" and "liberal" are really logical titles for people anymore.  Most people I know will say they're conservative, but when you ask about specific laws or ideas or mindsets they tend to lean far more towards the middle than they think they do.
