Quick. Hurry. I need book/gift recommendations

H and I are buying new iPhones for each other for Christmas, but I wanted to get him something small to open for his birthday (which is on Christmas).

Since it's so late, I'm thinking a book or a good gadget I can get somewhere. H really likes books about:

- Historical stuff, especially around 1850's-WWII
- Baseball stuff - especially the cardinals
- Anything about past presidents

He really liked Guns, Germs, and Steal if any of you know of that book. He also wants some tools, but I don't know exactly what to get him. It's getting a saw and a laser level for Christmas.

Any ideas??

  • You should get him Fall of Giants by Ken Follett. It's about WWI and it's awesome. It is kind of more European centered, but it has American characters as well and talks about Woodrow Wilson some. It's fiction, is he cool with that?
  • I don't think so! The last two books he read were about Stan Musial and the history of baseball I believe.
  • Possibly Anna. He reads mostly non-fiction, but if it's based on real events he could be into it.
  • The Erik Larson books are good for non-fiction historical type of stuff. I've read Garden of Beasts and Devil in the White City and they were both good.
  • If he likes historical books, you should check out stuff by Bernard Cornwell.  I have a history buff friend who is obsessed with his work.  I think he's best known for his series on the Napoleonic Wars though.

    Here's his website: http://www.bernardcornwell.net/index.cfm?page=2&BookId=7

  • Oh! Unbroken! That's a good one.
  • If he is into historical fiction around the Civil War, my best recommendation is The Killer Angels by Michael Shaara.  It is spectacular.

Team of Rivals  <--As a bit of a "Lincoln historian" this is one of the best books I've ever read about him.
  • Devil in the White City was excellent. And I just found out it's being made ini a movie with some really great actors.

  • Bay, I think I read that in high school!

These are all good recommendations. Thanks guys!!
  • Oh and my mom is reading Bill O'Reilly's book about Lincoln. It's not political or anything, it focuses on the last two weeks-ish of his life. It sounded really interesting.

[QUOTE]Has he read A Short History of Nearly Everything by Bill Bryson? My H is a history buff and my mom gave it to him for Christmas. We went to Italy a few days later and he ignored me and the scenery the whole time because he loved that damn book so much. It is a really good book.

    I'll ditto this.

Usually if I give H or my dad a book on Churchill, they'll be happy.  Ooh, and I heard an interview of this author on NPR, and the book sounds fantastic:

  • Oh Mica that looks like something he'd like!
