f/u to my haiti story

I mentioned it last night in the kui thread, and a few people asked questions after I had gone to bed.  My apologies for missing them.  Below is an article from CNN.  Thanks for your thoughts, and for anyone else, if you're so inclined, say a prayer for his family, especially his wife who was able to survive.  I just hope they can find his body and bring him home.

And, semi page to Lynda -- any updates with the people you're connected to?

  • I saw this on the news!! Such a sad story. I'm sorry, but I must have missed how you're connected to them?

Fischy, I went to college with him at Luther.  He was a year older than me but I saw him all the time in the music building.  He had a personality and presence that one could never forget.
  • I read the KUI thread. So sorry, Kate. My thought are with everyone in Haiti and their families. Such a horrible, horrible disaster.

  • Thanks lady. It just feels like a very tough blow to our alumni community, which is very closely knit since it's such a small school.  I am so sad for those who were closer to him.  He was president of the top choir at school, very involved with church stuff obviously, and had such a great smile.  I'm not the most religious person around but it pains me that someone who was there to do good work, God's work, was the person whose life was cut short.  It doesn't seem fair.  And he had only been there for a few days.
  • Like the Decorah Luther? What year did you graduate?

  • Yep, the Decorah Luther :) I graduated in 2007.
  • at the risk of sounding overly sappy, God must have decided that he need him up there to help with all those that perished.

  • I'm so sorry Katie.

No updates yet.  With each day that goes by pepole are getting more and more depressed.

DH is having a meeting with all of his Haitian staff today. It's againist policy to have cell phones on us at work (not really a bad policy when you work in the service industry).   But he has allowed and will continue to allow them to have their cell phones on them for the next few weeks or until they hear from their families.  We have setup donations for the families also.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • Ya don't say! I had me a time or two at Luther...

Being from a small lutheran college myself, I know how close those alumni groups are. Was his wife a Luther alum, too?

  • aMrs -- I hope it works like that up there, as much as one can believe in those things.  I'm not sure what I believe sometimes, but things like this seem to reinstill my hope that the good people go to a good place.

Lynda -- that's really good, I hope people get answers on their loved ones soon.

No way!  Details, please!  PM if it's extra debaucherous.  (is that a word?) Haha but really, I wonder if we have any non-knottie mutual FB friends?  There are some crazy small Lutheran school connections I've heard of!
  • I would have been there more in the early 2000's. I had a good friend of mine who went to Luther.

I also work with some Luther girls who were big into the sorority life.

Ah ok.  That's really cool nonetheless.

And...dun dun dun...I was a Tau Delt.  Wonder if I've heard of any of them, we're fairly knowledgable about family trees  :p
  • Katie, they ran a short piece with a video clip of him on KCCI's website this morning, if you want to see it.

Again, you have all of my sympathies. I'm so sorry.

Lynda, I hope your staff members hear good news soon.

I love you Missy. Even though you are not smart enough to take online quizzes to find out really important information. ~cew
  • I saw that story on the news last night Kate, it's so sad.  It seems so unfair that someone so good would be gone in something so terrifying.  They really need the emotional and spiritual support that he could have given.

On a side note, I think a guy I went to high school with went to Luther College, maybe graduated a within a year or two of you Kate.  I remember seeing that college name when I scrolled through classmates on FB.  Small world!
  • Missy and Mocha -- it is crazy how small of a world it is, and the multiple communities that have been affected by his loss.  Makes me feel better knowing that we're all connected a little bit more.
