So I can't use it...?

Is it poor ettiquette to use a shower gift before you are married?

Re: So I can't use it...?

  • Yes, I'm pretty sure you're not supposed to use any gifts until after you are married.

  • I don't know about being bad etiquette, but some people consider it to be bad luck to use gifts before the wedding.

Also, if the wedding doesn't happen for some reason, you need to give the gift back.

  • Yep. Not supposed to use them. I will have a hard time with this once since I just moved and pretty much have nothing. Good thing my shower gifts are being driven down by my parents a week or so before the wedding.

  • While the gift giver won't really know whether or not you have used the gift before th wedding, most recommend that you do not. Just in case the wedding doesn't happen (you never know) you can return the gift to the sender.
  • They say yes.  But we did... If the wedding did not take place we had the funds to replace the gift.

We just didn't have the space to keep the stuff until after the wedding.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • God forbid, but if the wedding does not happen, you are supposed to return the gift to the giver. So you really shouldn't use the gift unless you can monetarily reimburse the giver.

I would actually say that it depends on the gift.  If someone gave you like a bath set from Bath and Body Works, then yeah, I think you can use that.  If it's something from your registry, or clearly meant for your new home, then that should wait.
