How soon should engagement pics be taken?

We did ours at about 5 months.

We took ours about a year out because I wanted to have time to get them done, decide whether or not we liked the photographer, and then book her (or find a different one if we were unhappy). But honestly, if you want them, just do them whenever you have time/feel like it. If you want the pictures for Save the Dates, those should go out 6-8 months before the wedding, so you'd need to take the photos long enough before then to get them back, pick a picture, and get the Save the Dates printed and mailed.

Whenever you want. If you're planning to use them for STD's or something, then the sooner the better. We took ours a year after we got engaged, because we wanted to wait for cool fall weather, and didn't have our wedding photographer booked until around that time (we wanted to use the same person to get an idea of the work she would do at our wedding).

We're taking ours this summer, at a year out, because I want to use them as save the dates.

We had ours done at 10 months out because at the time I had planned to use them for our STDs.

We did ours at like 4 1/2 months out, maybe a little less.  While we have plenty of time to use them for pics at the reception/our own personal use, it was too late for STDs so that wasn't very bright.

We did ours about a year out because the weather and lighting were perfect, and our photog was free.. timewise and money wise.

we had ours done at 6 months out. and I was supposed to do STDs last week. oops. but circumstances necessitated (sp?) the timing. annoying.

Well our engagement is going to be pretty long, so we actually had them done this past Saturday because we are excited but can't start planning yet. We will probably get up to date ones done closer to the wedding to use for STDs though. These are just to celebrate and enjoy And they were my fiance's Christmas gift to me.
