Umbrella etiquette?

So... I was devistated to learn this morning that the extended forecast calls for rain the day of our ceremony. I managed to pick myself out of my depression by getting a super cute white umbrella that was on sale, but now I have lots of new worries.

My main question is in regards to the wedding party. Do I buy them all umbrellas? We are on a really tight budget, and I never calculated this into the budget since we live in high desert. Ack!

Re: Umbrella etiquette?

  • I would hope they would have their own.   If they don't I would offer up one of yours to borrow.

*** I have about 4-5umbrellas because I always seem not to have one when I need it and buy another.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • oh, If you know any golfers see if you can borrow one from them.   I had a very strong Tropical Storm hit my wedding day.  I was able to borrow our friends' large golf umbrellas. They were much better than your standard one.

  • My photographer actually brought a couple along with her.  DH had fun with one in some pics (we got snowed on, not rained on).

  • Whatever you do, you might want to mention the forecast to them just in case they don't look themselves.

Umbrellas are so cheap maybe you could get cute matching ones as props for your photos (assuming you WP isn't huge)?

  • Take a deep breath.  You can definitely get cute umbrellas for cheap - I'd even check maybe the dollar store?

And, as PP said, it may call for rain all week this week, and then they'll up and change their mind and it will be sunny for your wedding.  So, relax, let your BP know there may be a chance of rain that weekend, and what your plans are.

Also, you can get some super cute pictures in the rain.

  • Don't torture yourself with watching the extended forecast. The rain might not happen. I find your username a bit ironic, given your worry over the weather.Wink

Haha, I know right? Normally i'd love to see rain, since we can go literally from May to November without a drop during summers. It was just really unexpected and left me scrambling since the dinner was outdoors too. Now that I have my super cute umbrella though, i'm kind of enchanted with the idea.

Here's the umbrella I found, btw.  I loooooves it!

  • Do you have the opportunity to move everything inside in case it rains?
  • Yes we have a backup plan, but it's not as nice as 'dining in the waterfall garden'. Oh well, life goes on and I get an awesome husband.

Just a thought. I saw a super cute wedding picture where the wedding party had matching umbrellas that went with their color scheme. It might be worth the investment so you can take pics somewhere outside if you can afford it..
  • I LOOOVE your umbrella. Where did you get that!?

Thanks! I found it on ebay. It was really hard to find a US seller since I dont have time for international shipping, but several sellers have them in a number of colors.
