s/o Music

Thanks again for all the suggestions last night. I listened to a little bit of everything this morning (I would switch to the next song after like 30 seconds though because I got anxious to hear everything) and so far, I love it all.

Now, I'm curious as to how everyone has their music organized on their computer?
I used to have a seperate folder for every artist but it started getting ridiculous...

Re: s/o Music

  • I just use iTunes on my Mac and I have it all alphabetically by artist and then I have two dozen or so playlists for certain moods, events etc.

  • basically the same as alix except not so many playlists.

  • Embarassed I have an exceptionally large music collection and I'm hardcore OCD... hence all the playlists.

  • But don't you have the music saved somewhere on your computer itself?
  • All of my music is stuck on my dead laptop. :( But, I organized it just like Alix organized her music.

  • I hate iTunes because it automatically sorts it by artist when you rip it off cd.  I need it to save by album, so I always have to do it by hand.  :(  It makes me hate ripping music.

  • Do you guys get your music exclusively from iTunes? 90% of my music is from Limewire so it saves to my computer and sometimes the title/ artist is messed up..

sucrets, if it didn't take so long for iTunes to open, I would open up the program and see if I can find a pathway for you to change that.

roxy, my music is saved on a separate hard drive in my desktop that I use specifically for music, pictures and movies (so it is less likely to get screwed up by bugs, or wiped, or whatever). the filename for a particular song is something like d:/mymusic/itunes/[artist]/[album]/[song]. it's in an itunes folder, then organized alphabetically by artist, then alphabetically within the artist by album, then the song in order of the album. compilations (like soundtracks, "best of the 80s", etc) are saved in their own folder instead of by artist, then by album. and I have it set up so that when I download (I rarely buy cds then rip), it downloads automatically into the folder I want, then is loaded into iTunes automatically.

and yea, I use limewire too, and sometimes it is messed up. I fix that immediately upon downloading (just rename the appropriate fields in iTunes) then it is automatically sorted into the correct folder. I do have *some* stuff that is not organized at all, but it's about 1% of my collection.

    sorry for the novel.

  • I assume it's somewhere on my harddrive but I don't know, it's a Mac right, so as soon as I either buy it off iTunes, rip it off a cd or download it off Limewire it just syncs into my iTunes by itself.

Sucrets you can adjust your settings in iTunes so it comes up being sorted by album, it's in the preferences.

  • It's not in iTunes that's the problem, it's the folder that it puts it in when it rips, and I haven't found a way to change that.  I haven't looked in a few years, though.

roxy - I love ya, but please make sure you purchase at least some of the music you really like.  We need to support good artists if we want them to still be able to produce albums!

  • I'm a Limewire user. I have organized files under my "Music" folder on my computer. My itunes is ridiculously organized, my music folders, not so much.

I know, this always makes me feel bad. I do purchase albums from my favorite lesser known artists.
  • I'm the same as roxy re: downloads. if it's one of my favorite texas country artists that pretty much only gets shows in TX, LA, OK, and CO, then I'll buy their cd. but if it's the latest radio hit by Lady Gaga, for example,  I figure she and her recording company and her manager and her agent and the rest of her entourage have enough money that the $20 I spend on a CD isn't going to make them blink an eye.

Yes, but the guy working the sound board for that CD is not reeling in the $$.  And less money means less albums being produced, which will put those people out of work.

I'm not saying I'm perfect; I have downloaded music before, but if it's something I listen to on a pretty regular basis, I make sure I buy it.
