S/O Sister Wives (TR)

http://www.people.com/people/article/0,,20429667,00.html

I did wonder about the legal ramifications while I was watching the other night.

Also, I feel bad for Meri that she only has the one daughter and all the others are baby factories.

Re: S/O Sister Wives (TR)

  • I'm sad I missed this show... I have to watch it. It's definately going to be interesting to compare this real life to Big Love.

I thought that too, about Meri, that I wonder if she feels "inferior" or something for only being able to have one child.

I wonder how the legal stuff will affect the show. Are all of episodes taped already? And again, if he's only legally married to Meri there shouldn't be a problem, right? But they didn't discuss that.

The whole thing fascinates me. And now that he's "courting" another woman, the current wives' reaction is really interesting. I think he even said, "They're ok with other wives, but not a girlfriend." It brings up all kinds of questions about cheating and what is and isn't ok.

They were surprisingly normal (for lack of a better word) in their other conversations about raising their children and their expectations for their childrens' lives.

  • The weird thing about Meri, is that she's the original polygamist, yet she seems to have the most jealousy issues.

It seems like all the episodes are already taped, so I don't know that we'll see any legal stuff until next season (you KNOW there'll be a next season, this is TLC we're talking about).

I was more confused about how and why he decided to "court" a woman three hours away. I think that the wives' jealousy stems from the fact that they didn't pick her, he did. It seems like Meri picked the other two wives, so the fact that he's now gone out on his own is weird.

As for the 4th chick, it seems like she jumps right in; I know all of Kody's former marriages were quicker than normal, but that was pre-12 kids, so I think they culd slow it down this time.

So many questions... I'm going to become addicted to these crazy polygs (pligs).

Oh!! And how weird was it to see a 16 year old boy make breakfast every day for his siblings? I'm sorry, but outside the Duggar family, that's abnormal.

Also, I told my H that Michelle Duggar needs a damn sister wife.

This exactly. H was like, "So was he out in bars looking for a fourth or what?" I mean, it's not like this woman went to their church or they bumped into her in the produce section, you know?

It's also got to be weird for them, they've all been together for 16 years. That's a long ass time. And the three wives are all that all of the kids have ever known, so I agree that it's strange that they're moving so fast. And bringing in more kids.

And I enjoy the fact that they're new to this and obviously haven't cultivated personalities just for TV the way Jon & Kate seemed to. I also really liked them teasing Christine about the toaster thing :) That was cute.

  • I saw a small part of the show and wanted to know: Did anyone else think it was weird that the families are sort of divided? The wives and Kody all say they are one family, but that kid who was making breakfast said he usually only does it for his siblings. That seemed odd to me. I think I need to see the whole show. Maybe I can find a rerun or watch it online.

  • The end of the Perez Hilton thing confuses me where he says Kody "admits" that he's only lawfully married to one woman. That makes it NOT polygamy, right? So...I don't get it.

I think the kid only making breakfast for his family is more that it's hard for one kid to make breakfast for 12 others? It seemed like some things worked better divided and some worked better together.

  • Awesome, I'll have to find it tonight when I get home. I really wanted to see the whole thing.

  • Yeah, if he's only legally married to Meri, then the rest of them are just common law, and I don't see how that could be investigated. That would just make them polyamorous, wouldn't it? Plus, if they investigate this family, wouldn't they have to investigate them all? The People article said they were being investigated before the taping started.

I really want to know what the two working wives' jobs are. Especially Janelle, where does she go all day?

And I judge her for having six kids but preferring work over raising them. That seems like the lazy way out since there IS another woman at home taking care of her kids.
  • And I totally understand the separate living spaces; otherwise it'd be like camp all the time. I do think Kody needs one central closet. I'd add one when I built the addition for Wife #4 if I were him.
  • If they are actual common-law marriages that would otherwise be recognized by the state as a legal marriage, then it's polygamy in Utah. That's where they live, right? I think that's the basis for the investigation.

The state convicted some guy named Green for this years ago, based on his public statements, and the conviction was upheld all the way to and by the Supreme Court.

Eh, I don't know. I can kind of understand it. I'm sure it was a mutual decision amongst her and the other wives and Kody that, ok we need more than one income, Christine likes being the homemaker and they all wanted more children so it's not like Janelle said hey, I'm gonna pop out these babies, but hell if I'm staying home so you're stuck with them.

I do want to know what Meri does. She mentioned going back to school, but not going to work whereas they showed Janelle going to work even if they didn't say exactly what she does or where she does it.

In the article I posted it says they are looking to charge the family with third degree bigamy. Even though he is only legally married to one woman the bigamy laws include all forms of marriage, so common law might count.

  • That makes sense, squirrly. They've all been together for 16 years, so I think it would qualify for legal common law status.

I wonder how insurance for three wives and twelve kids works? Talk about a Family Plan.
  • I was surprised by how well they got along. I'm not sure what I was expecting, but they all seemed pretty well adjusted, especially the kids. I was wondering if they would be investigated for it, though, after I watched the show last night.

How much younger is #4 than the rest of them? 8 or 10 years?

Maybe it's just me, but aren't there more "criminal" crimes that our resources could go towards eradicating?

  • Janelle's kids and Meri's daughter may be on their insurance if they have it through work.

  • Georgia-I see why you patted my head now, I should have clicked your link first. I go to Perez Hilton for my scandalous news :)

  • Well, during one discussion, Meri said her work schedule wasn't as flexible as Janelle's, so I think she does work somewhere.

And I understand what you're saying, TR, but I just wonder if Christine got sort of trapped in that role, you know?

I was really interested to see how the kids got treated at school until they said that they went to school with other children of polygamy. I find it hard to believe that there's such a large group of people who see this as normal behavior.

I just want to see the fourth wife introduced. They already have such a routine down that it'll be interesting to see how she'll fit in. And how the wives will react to adding yet another woman to the "marriage bed" rotation.
  • Re: insurance. Probably medicaid/welfare/WIC/etc. for the wives not legally married to him and not working. He should be able to cover all his biological children on his work policy regardless of whether their mother is covered, though.

    As strange as that is.

  • No problem, lilianne. :)

kayak, I think 10-12 years younger. Honestly, there's no way I'd try to enter a family where the last wife in was 16 years ago. Talk about awkward.

zippity, they ARE in Utah. I bet they have to look for stuff to keep law enforcement engaged.

TR, that's true. So I guess he'd only have six or seven kids on his. All the funny-named ones.

    That totally makes sense.
  • I wonder if she maybe can't have more than one kid.

I was shockingly interested in the show. I've never understood how a polygamist family works.
  • I wonder if the two women work for benefits. He was driving a sweet Lexus, so it's possible too that his business is lucrative enough that they are paying out of pocket.

As far as the legal stuff goes, it's hard to beleive that this is a crime. Hopefully they are paying their taxes correctly, and not taking advantage of the government, but this gets filed for me under "it's their business".

He's sort of got that creepy "i'm a god to all women" vibe.

Apparently you can meet your new sister wife online. Some of the profiles are um, interesting.
