*Salt or other yoga people*

So, I'm going to my first beginner's yoga class on Saturday morning.  I'm all yay and a little nervous.  Any tips for a first timer?  Anything I should know?  I really hope I like it.

Re: *Salt or other yoga people*

  • Wear clothes the are tight yet comfy enough that you can do different positions. Also, if you are like me, be prepared to fall a lot lol!

  • I just very recently starting doing yoga and I looooove it! I'm not particularly knoweldgable about it yet, but I just wanted to put my two cents in and say that I hope you enjoy. I really do.

  • What type of Yoga are you going to?

  • Don't put your mat too close to anyone else.

Tell the instructor you're new beforehand--they may be able to keep an eye on you to make sure you're doing stuff right.

Don't wear a loose shirt--people will be able to see up it when you're in certain positions.  I also don't recommend short shorts.

Don't wear heavy perfume and shut your cell phone off!

Have fun.  I love yoga and wish I could do more of it.

  • Don't worry too much about doing things like everyone else.  I mean, your closest approximation, obviously, and make sure you're doing things RIGHT, but it's likely there will be some things you just can't do, and don't push yourself too hard right out of the gate.  Do what you can, and push yourself a little, but don't go nuts.
  • Vinyasa.  It's a beginner's series so I'm hoping that'll make me feel like less of a tool because I'm assuming everyone else will be lost too.

Thanks so much for the tips. ladies.  Especially the big shirt thing, Brie.  I was totally going to do big tee shirt.  You saved me some embarrassment!
  • I agree with the overly loose shirt and shorts comments. I always wear a somewhat tight shirt (loose enough that I can move freely, but tight enough it doesn't bag, generally sleeveless) and at least capri length pants. Another option is shorts with spandex shorts/leggings underneath. I saw waay too much flesh from other people who wore baggy clothes on the first days of class. Shorts & shirts will ride up. So be aware when you plan your outfit for the day.
Also, take a small towel (it can be used to help support your back when learning new positions and wipe up sweat) and a bottle of water.
  • Here's a silly question (feel free to point and laugh) - Do you wear shoes while doing yoga or just your socks?  Mostly wondering because it's going to be cold as all get out on Saturday and possible snowy so I'll wear/bring certain shoes if I have to wear them for the yoga itself.

Also, I think I just took all my good workout tanks to Goodwill because I was never using them and I was in a purge mood.
  • I usually do yoga barefoot.  Most people in my class are usually barefoot, too.  It helps because you need to use monkey toes to grip the floor sometimes.  Most people just take their shoes off when they get there.

  • No shoes or socks for me!

  • I wear socks, but only because it's winter and I have zero blood circulation anyway. I think I'd have frost bite by the end if I didn't keep my socks on.

  • have something light in your belly, like a banana.
  • I do kundalini yoga and I do it barefoot. I ned to get back into it. It's pretty fun. Well, it can be hard, but you feel great after.
