"Thank You's" Question

If a guest gives you money...how would you word the Thank You...

For example:  Thank You so much for your generous gift....

Would you suggest that you used it to purchase a particular thing...?
Just curious how others have handled it.
Thank you.

Re: "Thank You's" Question

  • I always say what we will use it for.

  • I don't think you have to be too specific, but at least give a general idea of what you plan on using it for - we wrote "it will be helpful as we begin to decorate and furnish our new home together" since we had just bought a house.

ditto PP - give some indication, but it doesn't have to be exact like "we will use it to purchase a new blender".

H and I purchased a new patio set and new sofas right after the wedding, so a lot of our thank you notes indicated one of those two items since they're pretty big-ticket and I liked giving a concrete example.  We also splurged a little on the honeymoon and mentioned, to a select few we knew would appreciate it, that we used the money to splurge and do a helicopter tour or something like that.  To a few relatives who gave us RIDICULOUSLY generous gifts we mentioned it would greatly help build our "nest egg" b/c I know that's what their intention was and that they would very much support saving.

If you're unsure how they'd feel about a particular thing or don't have any larger ticket items I think a generic "to furnish our new home together" or "to start our new lives together" is a good option.
  • If you have some idea of what you will be using the money for, thank them for making it possible.  Otherwise, thank them for their generosity.
