I have a pots and pans question

So, Sweden apparently doesn't do "sets" of items unless it's Ikea.  Weird.  I don't want Ikea, I want something kind of higher end, but not outrageous.  So, I'm taking suggestions.

These are the ones I'm currently considering:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Tefal-Supra-Cookware-Set-Piece/dp/B0027P88SC/ref=sr_1_8?s=kitchen&ie=UTF8&qid=1304278636&sr=1-8

Thoughts/comments?

Re: I have a pots and pans question

  • We have a Tefal frying pan and like it. I think the brand has a pretty good reputation.
  • My whole set is Tefal. I've had it quite a few years, and it has held up well. I love it.

  • I have a set of TowneCraft pots and pans, but they have to be bought from a seller and so you would have to find one. They are stainless steel with a lifetime warranty waterless cookware.

Kate, the reason I'm looking on the Amazon UK site is that I live in Sweden.  As mentioned in my OP. ;)

My T-Fal frying pans have all held up really well, and I like them a lot. I did end up getting a frying pan with deeper sides and a big lid, though, because I am clumsy and I tend to flip stir fry ingredients onto the floor and also because a lot of my recipes require a certain amount of time in a frying pan with a lid (like pork chops and such). If you do stuff with lids, you might want to look for a set where the saucepan/Dutch oven lids are also compatible with the frying pans.

In general, though, I'm not so big on "sets" of cookware, because I prefer to buy individual pieces that are to my exact specifications rather than a set of stuff. And I think one should generally spend more money on frying pans than saucepans, because to me a saucepan is a saucepan. I'm still using the cheapo saucepans I bought when I was in college, and they don't bother me. But a good frying pan is necessary.

  • Yeah, I get what you're saying Sarah.  The problem for me comes in when ONE of the same Tefal frying pans (like in the set I listed) costs the equivalent of $56 for a 24cm.  The cost is out.rageous and I'm just not willing to do it.

That makes sense then. If I could get a whole bunch of stuff for only a fraction more than getting only one of the things individually, I would totally go for it too, because I am a cheapskate.

I've been happy with my T-Fal things, other than the sides of the pans being a little short for my liking/clumsiness. They hold up, and the red circle thing in the middle that changes to let you know the pan is hot enough is convenient, especially if you have an electric range. And it can be nice to have different sizes for different tasks.

  • LTB, they apparently don't sell that brand on the UK amazon. :(

That's my OTHER problem Sarah.  I want nice things, but I also want to cheap out. lol... It's a difficult balance! :D

Well, sounds like you should buy the T-Fal, then, because I think that's the brand that was invented to be the delicate balance between nice and cheaping out. :)

  • ha! :D  Oh, and I do have an electric range and I have a hell of a time knowing when to put shiit in there.  Drives me nuts.  Hate electric.

This is a pan like what you were describing: http://www.elgiganten.se/product///BEK13078284/pro-induktion-stekpanna

$59.  For a brand I've never heard of.

Yeah, that's kinda weird. And Swedish is funny. :)

You may have completely different needs than I have with frying pans, too. I bet there are plenty of people who manage to fry things successfully without throwing their food on the floor. I'm just not one of them. :)

If you'd like to read some more, here's the newspaper for our area: http://www.sydsvenskan.se/

I generally manage to keep the food in the pan. ;)

Hm, LTB, the only thing I can think of is that the voltage is different here, but I don't know if that leads to slower/faster heat up or what.  It generally takes an ass long time.

The woes of living over- seas. Things are so different and difficult but we tend to manage somehow:(  I used to have ppl bring me mircle-whip, rice-a-roni, powdered ranch dressing, toco seasoning and ketchup to name a few things.

I personaly like farberware, not sure how accesable those are there, I know further East they were impossible to find but that was before internet.

Maybe when someone comes to visit have them bring you set or the pan you truely want,  in the mean time make do with what you can :( Good luck.
  • MOB, are you over in Europe?

In general, I don't mind the cost of things here, but this is something that DOES.  If can find a big purchase somewhere else cheaper, why not? :)  But I'm also not going to ask someone to smuggle me in a set of pots and pans through customs.  That would kind of defeat the purpose, haha.

@ Snippy, I no longer live over seas, H was miltary and we (he) were stationed over there. It was "easier" to get things then it is now :( There was a $$ limit on what you could bring as gifts w/o paying customs, but like I stated that was years ago. My daughter is going to Germany with her soon 2 b H who is also military.
  • I have a set of T-Fal, too.  I didn't see the point in upgrading when we got married because they are still in very good shape.  I would recommend T-Fal, if you can get your hands on it.

  • I know you said no Ikea, but I have been really pleased with the nonstick skillets I got from Ikea (had them for 4 or 5 years).  I got a cheap set of pans that are crap from there, but the Favorit frying pan, which I have in 2 sizes, is great.  Plus it doesn't have plastic on the handle, so we can use it in the oven for frittatas and such.  http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/80083459
http://www.ikea.com/se/sv/catalog/products/80083459 (I have no idea how much that amounts to)

If U R by a military base maybe ask them to look at the BX 4 u :) or have them look on the AAFES website on what is available.
  • We're not military MOB.  We're here by choice, both working. :)  There's still a limit as to what you can bring-- hence why it's better for me to just find things online that I can ship in because the EU doesn't impose extra taxes on things from within Europe.

Thanks for the advice all.  I'm off to bed! :)
  • How exciting! So many great things to see and do! Makes the U.S.A. seem like a baby compared to the "relics" they have there to see. I loved it! but it als gave me a greater appeiciation of what we do have here state side. Simple thing as well like frying pans :)

My folks moved back to my father's home country( that used to be communist) for many reasons, but they have sence moved back.

    Sleep well.

Like JessicaBessica, I like my Ikea pans too. I have stainless steel though, and it looks like you're looking at non-stick. I have a feeling the non-stick from Ikea might be a bit less reliable. I have this set: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/30101168
  • I'm also in the Tefal is a good brand group. I've had a toaster and a pan or two by them and I was really happy.

<div>I can't tell for sure, but I think I had the frying pan that comes as part of that set (bought to use only on Passover), and it was much thinner than the Favorit frying pans, which I guess is reflected in the price.  </div>
  • T-Fal is good.  I bought a set several years ago.  I probably wouldn't be registering for another set if I hadn't lost parts of the set while moving to different places over the years.
