What's the difference!

In all the videos and wedding magazines theres a lot of talk about wedding types and styles.  Being new to the bridal scene I guess my eye is not yet trained to notice the diferences between them.

Can someone tell me what the difference is between formal, casual, modern, rustic, traditional, etc....... wedding.  Or someplace online I can go that can explain it to me.

  • Here, check out this link:

    http://wedding.theknot.com/wedding-planning/wedding-styles.aspx

It shows some basic wedding styles and might be a good place for you to get started. It can definitely be overwhelming if this is your first time delving into the wedding planning world!

  • I think the type of wedding (formal, casual or black tie affair) has to do with the venue the couple chooses.

The theme (modern, rustic, winter, traditional) also depends on what the bride and groom want for their wedding day. Choosing a theme is really not necessary, we did not choose a theme persay, we just knew what our vision was and went for it.

While TK is very helpful, there is also a lot of info on here that can be very overwhelming for someone who is just starting to plan (I felt the same way). Just take one day at time, start gathering ideas and pics. Put together a notebook or folder of things you like and go from there.
  • I don't think you should pay much attention to those labels. Do what you like, and don't worry about sticking to a certain theme.

  • I once had a Turkish guy tell me that he'd never met anyone but Americans who loved to label stuff so much.  Everyone and everything must have a label!  Why can't things just be what they are?

  • Hi Bubbalub,

I just noticed your sig pic.  Are you a Cal grad?
  • Hi Mica!

Nope, but we got married at The Faculty Club on campus. :) It is beautiful there.

  • I love the Faculty Club.  And the Cal campus is so beautiful.  I thought about getting married there, but H is a Stanford grad, so that wouldn't work.

    Gorgeous picture, btw!
  • Hah! Yeah, I can see a Stanford grad not wanted to get married on Bears territory. :P

Thank you! I love our pics!

  • Ack!  How could I have not noticed the Campanile in the background?  I'm so ashamed.

But I do love that pic, Bubb!
  • Go Bears!

Sorry for the threadjack.  I'd probably try to match my decorations and theme to the reception venue and setting.  Rustic and penthouse loft would probably not mix.  Modern and country club might also be tough.  Formal and community park again would be a rough combo.  Does that sort of make sense?  I'd figure out where you and FI want to marry, then go from there.
