Pre-Wedding Party Question

FI and I are still unsure of what we want to/can afford to do for our wedding (because we want to save for a down-payment on a house), so I suggested having a cake and punch reception at a local park and he liked the idea. Then, as we were talking some more, we got on the topic of registries and pre-wedding parties and he let it slip that his mother may be planning on throwing a surprise bridal shower for me. (Just for the record, I know we're a year away and plans can change, but he made it sound like she really wants to). Is this okay? I don't really know the etiquette for pre-wedding parties for a cake and punch reception, so I was just wondering if anyone had any experience with this? TIA.

I think a cake-and-punch reception sounds lovely!  I think people have become so focused on the reception and the party that they lose focus on the actual marriage part.  I think in most cases, simpler is better.

As long as the people invited to the shower are also invited to the wedding, you're fine.   It doesn't have to be EVERY women who is invited to the wedding though.  Most people just invite close friends and family.  If this shower is going to be a surprise, you might want to hint to your fiance that he should check over the guest list to make sure his mom doesn't invite anyone who isn't going to be invited to the wedding.  Your fiance can also suggest friends of yours that you might want at the shower.  However, since it sounds like his mom is going to host, ultimately the guest list is up to her and who/how many she feels comfortable hosting.
