rehearsal dinner bbq?

am i required to have a rehearsal dinner at a restaurant? my wedding is in august, fi and i have a nice backyard & deck and we live 3 miles away from the church. i thought about having a nice summer night bbq with our approx 20 guests in order to keep it casual AND save money (which is getting tighter and tighter as the weeks go by). is this appropriate?

  • Can I come?

That's perfectly fine and sounds fun to me :o)

DH's parents baked a lot of Italian food for our RD and we had everyone back to our house. It was very relaxed and easy going. Which was nice, since the whole week had been relatively stressful.

  • sounds good.

We had an at home RD.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.

    YUM. BBQ rocks.

Also consider your guests since pork is common for BBQ: anyone Jewish or Muslim? If so, maybe have a chicken or beef BBQ dish along with pork, or just have chicken and/or beef.

  • We are having a BBQ for our RD!  I am so excited about it!  We plan to have a bonfire and some outdoor games (cornhole, etc.)  It fits our personalities or low key and we want to enjoy the time with our closest friends and family!
  • no jewish or muslim guests.

  • yea, our wedding is a little more low-key and chill, so i figured this would be a fun get-together and again, cost effective for us. i know my mom and fmil would be more than happy to bake something to help us out. they enjoy baking and are very supportive. also, fsil's enjoy baking as well. i would NEVER ask anyone to make anything at all, but i am sure that they would offer.

  • We're doing this also!

I went to one last summer and it was so much fun!  It was so relaxing especially because the wedding the next day was very big and formal.

    Good luck!

I think a low-key and casual RD would be fun even if you're having a super-fancy wedding the next day.    I've been to a lot of wedding weekends where it seemed like I was going from one formal affair to another....it makes it really hard to plan for what to wear, and gets expensive (for girls anyway!) when you have to buy a few nicer outfits.    Plus it feels like everything is always scripted and you can't actually relax and hang out with everyone.

I love the idea of a backyard BBQ at home for an RD.
