Brother giving away

My brother will be giving me away. How does he answer when the question of "who gives this woman" is asked? Also, any ideas on a song for a dance?

Re: Brother giving away

  • My twin bro is giving me away as well. You can always eliminate the part where they ask that question. Or he can just say he does. Mine will probably say "our mother and I do" or something like that.
  • As far as the dance, I think we are skipping that part. I think it would be weird to dance with my bro. If I do the father/daughter it will be an uncle that I do dance with, but most likely am skipping it.,
  • As for a song, both my mother and father have passed away so my brother is walking me down the isle. He in many ways took over the father role with when I was growing up. We are dancing to Wind Beneath My Wings by Bette Midler. Cause he certaintly has been.
  • I've never heard that used in an actual wedding ceremony. Are you sure that your church/officiant requires it? You're not anyone's property. If you want your brother to say something, you could ask the officiant to instead say something like, "Who supports this woman in marriage?" (Or "who supports this couple in marriage?" and get your mother and FI's parents, if applicable, to say, "We do.")

  • my bro is "giving me away" as well. We are totally skipping all that "who gives this woman" stuff.  He will walk me down the aisle, give my hand to FI and he goes and sits beside my mother.  No one will even notice that nothing was said.
  • my brother walked me down the aisle yesterday.  we skipped the question - he stood w/ me until we said the 'I will' part and then I joined hands with my hubby and he went to stand with the other groomsmen.  worked out fine.  you don't have to have an official pronouncement of 'who gives this woman'.

  • I've heard a brother say "her family" when asked. As for dances I think a lot of songs would work. Anything you both love. "What a Wonderful World" is a good one.
  • I would get rid of that line. Do you want to dance with your brother? You don't have to.
