Anyone tech savvy around? (Nerdy blog question)

I have a question about bandwidth. My blog (link in sig) is apparenly at 80% of its usage for this month. In March I had no issues, last month I got to 85% right at the end of the month, and this month I'm at 80% by halfway through the month. Nothing has changed in terms of traffic, what I'm uploading, etc. I really do not get that much traffic (4,000 visits/10,000 pageviews a month), and I don't think I upload more than a normal amount of photos. My host says that almost all the bandwidth usage is from http, and I don't know what that means.

Any ideas on a) why this is happening and b) how to fix it? My only idea so far has been to upload photos via Flickr instead of directly to the blog, but I haven't done that yet because my template is too narrow to let me use the Flickr default site of 500 pixels, and I don't know how to make it wider yet. Argh. I kind of hate my blog right now.

  • Even if you don't get a significant increase in the number of people visiting your site per month, if you upload pictures it will increase your bandwith.

    Imagine it like this:
I first have a blog entry with one picture on the home page of my blog. 300 people visit my site, and so 300 pictures are downloaded. If I add another blog entry to that page with another picture, then if 300 people visit they are loading 600 pictures.

The only ways to solve this are to get more bandwith, or to decrease your pictures. Every time you upload one, maybe take one down? And then have a link to a picassa album or flicker where they can view all archived photos?
Those are the only options I can think of.

  • Thanks, that makes sense. I know pretty much nothing about this stuff, so that's at least a start.

I think I'm going to have to go back through and replace all the directly uploaded pictures with the Flickr links so the picture shows up but isn't hosted on my blog. That's not going to be a total nightmare or anything. And that's once I manage to figure out the problem of my theme being too narrow. I wish I just magically knew HTML.
  • I know HTML, so if you ever need help just PM me with "I want this, code it ktnx?"

    I'll be the E board's official IT support. :P

  • Oh, if you are serious, then that would be lovely. YGPM.
  • Late to this conversation, but the blog software could also be making inefficient code.  They may have changed something on their end that's resulting in this!  I think NC maybe kinda implied this :).

  • It's a wordpress blog, so I feel like it's unlikely to be their fault, although I don't know.
