Job related WWYD

I need some advice pretty please.

I just found a job posting in my field for a hospital here in STL. The problem is that I'm not finished with my internship until May. Would you still submit an application and your resume? My internship is considered full time, 40 hours per week, so I would be unable to start until it was over.

Re: Job related WWYD

  • Does the job description have a start date?  If you are right for the job, some (good) employers will wait for you to finish your training rather than pick someone who isn't a good fit because he/she is available now.
  • Are you going to need employment after your internship? If so I would apply. It at least gets your information into the hands of somewhere you'd like to work.

  • I would.  Not sure how the hiring is in your field, but I would say by the time they reviewed your application, called you in for an interview, held second round interviews, made a decision, and set a start date, you could not be too far off from May.
  • Yes, still submit your resume. It couldn't hurt. Who knows what kind of timeline they are on. Maybe by the time they have an applicant pool, select candidates to interview, do the interviews/second interview, it could be a while which will work in your favor. Good Luck!

  • Yes, I'd still submit a resume. If you get an interview I would suggest being honest and saying something about that. I do some of the hiring at my company and I'd be pretty annoyed if I offered someone a job and they told me they could take it but not for another 3 months.

  • I think I would. It can't hurt and you never know what will happen. Some places might take awhile to go through the entire process (job posting, reviewing applicants, conducting interviews).

  • Mica, there's no start date listed. Being a new graduate, I don't know if I would be a top pick, but all of my training/knowledge base will be up to date, which could make me a better candidate.

Looks like I need to clean up my resume.
  • Do it! No harm in trying, right?
  • Go ahead and do it!!  No harm in trying, and if you don't then the answer will remain no.. Good luck!!
  • the worst they can do is say no :)
  • As others have said, the worst they can say is no, and I think it would help your chances with future job openings with them, since it shows how eager you are to work there.

  • I'd go for it! Worst case scneario is they say no!
  • Even if this job doesn't work out, you still got your name and resume out there. This can be beneficial if they are hiring in the future. "Oh Jill interviewed with us last year, she was really good but not done with school in time to begin." And it's beneficial for networking purposes. "Oh, you're looking for a nurse? We interviewed Jill and she was a great candidate!"

  • Ditto PPs. I'm in the exact same situation regarding my paralegal certification course, and everyone I have spoken (professors and a hiring manager at a huge ATL law firm who spoke to our class) with on the matter says to go ahead and send them out. If they ask you to start next week, you simply have to explain your prior commitments but that you'd love to once your internship is complete.

  • I'd do it! I am going to start applying for jobs soon and my internship isn't done until August. The worst is that they say no.

  • I would apply.  I wish someone had to told me to apply for jobs while I was still in my last semester.  Instead I graduated on a Thursday, got married that Saturday, & didn't have a job for three months afterwards.
