Suggestions?

This morning, I shamefully found myself in tears of frustation with my weight. Usually, it's something I shake off, but for the last few weeks, I haven't been able to, and today, I think I just had a come-to-Jesus meeting with myself about it.

I texted my best friend who is also overweight like myself and has also been feeling frustation with herself over it. We used the afternoon to research local gyms, toured one of them and decided to sign up for it.

Tomorrow we have an appointment to meet with a trainer and we'll do the BMI measurements (I'm terrified) and then talk about healthy eating, what I want to focus on and what the battle plan is.

I need music suggestions to make a fantastic playlist.

Re: Suggestions?

  • 1st of all...Congrats! Starting out at a gym can be scary at first, but once you get into a routine you'll start to look forward to going.  If the BMI and measurements scare you, you can always ask the trainer to keep those numbers private and just let you know how many inches/pounds you lose from that week on.  As far as good playlists goes, I enjoy Black Eyed Peas, Britney, 80s rock, and sometimes find luck with looking on Billboard 100 for new hits.  Good luck!

One of my new favorite songs is Jamie Foxx ft. Justin Timberlake - "Winner"

I know that I need to eat healthier as well. It's just the whole getting the motivation to do it part that I'm stuck on.

The first step is the hardest, and most of the time you wont make a change in your life until you feel absolutely ready to - and it sounds like you are there. Just take it one day at a time, and remember if you slip up that you didnt gain the weight in one day so one day isnt going to ruin any progress youve made. Make smart choices, take it slow and you will have long term success! If you ever want to PM me on fb, you know where to find me ;)
  • I've been loving The White Stripes lately. Also, maybe some of The Shins more upbeat songs?
  • Thanks for the encouragment, y'all. It really helps. I've been telling people about it all day, because as Nebb said, this is me taking the step to change. And I need people to ask me about it and keep me motivated to stick with it. I'm the worst at running out of motivation. But I've finally got the mindset of, "Why envy fit people when I could get up off of my ass and do it myself?"

I'm determined to kick ass at this. Determined.

You can do it, the determination to better yourself will go a long way. Just remember in the end what is more important - being fit/thinner/healthier, or eating something really bad or being lazy? Which one is really more important, normally if you have this goal the healthy option will win out. Just keep it as your top priority.

I will keep on you asking about it until you tell me to F off !
  • You can do it Jess! I'm doing the same thing, and it's hard. For workout music, I like Rodrigo y Gabriela for an upbeat alternative to techno for cardio, and Motown, hip hop, and some pop for the rest of it. Good luck getting started! I think it's easier to stick with it once you take that first step and kick start your diet and exercise routine.

  • Congrats on getting going!  Just remember to be patient with yourself - your health and how you feel is always going to be more important than what the scale is telling you.

And for music, I definitely like speed metal and 80's rock.  Something with a fast tempo and good guitar.  Especially ACDC.
  • Congrats on making the first step, Jess! I'm not sure if it's your style or not, but I've found Body by Glamour's program to be incredibly helpful. They have a bunch of MP3 workout mixes you can download for free.  If you choose to use their program, I'll tell you that counting calories isn't fun, but once you get in the habit of it, it makes it so much easier to choose good portions (which is my downfall. Even brown rice and tofu isn't good for you if  you eat enough for 10 people, like I do :P).

In terms of music, I like Fallout Boy (I know, I know) and Lady Gaga. Her songs really pump me up, and they're about the right tempo if you're jogging.

If the gym has classes, those can be great. I went with a friend to a kickboxing class and a bootcamp class last week, and I can guarantee that I pushed myself much, much harder than I would have on my own.

One thing that might help is to totally ditch the scale for a month or two and just focus on your body measurements.  A lot of people don't lose weight right away, but their waists and hips will shrink significantly after a month or so.

I know this is much more than you asked for, but it sounds like this has been an emotionally tough issue. Way to go for taking that first, tough step! :)
  • I Made It by Kevin Rudolf. It's sooo hard for me not to dance my ass off when I'm on the treadmill and this song comes on. Instant swagger-ness.
