Early shower gifts - do I open them?

I've received 3 early shower gifts so far, from people who are unable to attend my showers. The showers are May 22 and May 28. At first, I was thinking I should bring them to the showers and open there, but now that I have 3 gifts, and still 2 weeks until the first shower, I'm afraid this could become a hassle. I'm also not 100% sure on the etiquette here. Am I supposed to open them now? I tried searching for this on Google and here on the Knot, but couldn't find anything 100% definitive.

Any input would be appreciated Smile  TIA!

Re: Early shower gifts - do I open them?

  • Open them, send the TY note right away. And then put them aside to use after the wedding.
  • If the shower was this weekend, I'd say wait and open them then.  But since it's a while still, ditto Missy.

  • I would also open them now, make sure they are not damaged or broken, and write a nice TY note to each of the givers.  Then tuck them away until you are Mr. & Mrs.  :)

  • Thanks everyone! That's what I was leaning towards but wanted other opinions first.

The same thing happened to me....my shower is May 14.  I got gifts from 4 different people  the beginning of last week. I opened them and sent the thank you note. I didn't want them to think they got lost in the mail or something like that.

This. The senders will want to know that it arrived safely.

  • Write the TY notes now...it'll save you time after the two showers and the senders will know that you received them safely!
  • The only other thing is to be careful in your thank you note. Unless they sent a card or something specifying that it's a shower gift, don't say 'shower gift'. On the off chance that it was meant as a very early wedding gift, you don't want to make them feel like they are supposed to get you something else too.
