Reception Dinner

I've been engaged less than a week and am VERY new to the whole planning my wedding situation. I know I'm very cheap and I just don't want to go too far. Is it necessary to serve a full meal at the reception? Would we be considered cheap if we don't?

Re: Reception Dinner

  • If the reception is at a meal time you need to serve a full meal. If you want to cut costs you could consider having a brunch reception or one mid afternoon or late evening where you could serve just appetizers and desserts.
  • Lots of people have late afternoon receptions and serve punch and cake, or evening weddings and serve hour'derves but like previous poster said, if it's at a meal time your guests will expect a meal.

  • I agree with PP's.

  • Keep in mind that sometimes serving hors d'oeuvres can cost you more than serving a full meal. I would definitely shop around. I know some people who have found great caterers with fantastic prices. Any thoughts on something like a backyard BBQ?

  • You could easily do hors d'oeuvres and cocktails, however I would price it out and see what would be less expensive. You wouldn't be viewed as cheap if you did something like that. It's very common and a lot of people do it.

Buffets aren't necessarily cheaper either. Sometimes they can be more expensive because you're paying to have the food replenished, available, and fresh for a certain amount of time.
