Reception Dinner

I've been engaged less than a week and am VERY new to the whole planning my wedding situation. I know I'm very cheap and I just don't want to go too far. Is it necessary to serve a full meal at the reception? Would we be considered cheap if we don't?

If the reception is at a meal time you need to serve a full meal. If you want to cut costs you could consider having a brunch reception or one mid afternoon or late evening where you could serve just appetizers and desserts.

Lots of people have late afternoon receptions and serve punch and cake, or evening weddings and serve hour'derves but like previous poster said, if it's at a meal time your guests will expect a meal.

Keep in mind that sometimes serving hors d'oeuvres can cost you more than serving a full meal. I would definitely shop around. I know some people who have found great caterers with fantastic prices. Any thoughts on something like a backyard BBQ?

You could easily do hors d'oeuvres and cocktails, however I would price it out and see what would be less expensive. You wouldn't be viewed as cheap if you did something like that. It's very common and a lot of people do it.

Buffets aren't necessarily cheaper either. Sometimes they can be more expensive because you're paying to have the food replenished, available, and fresh for a certain amount of time.
