Who to invite?

Should I invite some of my co-workers even though the wedding is about an hour and a half away?  We are not extremely close but have hung out at the bar on more than one occasion.  I don't have a lot of friends around here since my home town is an hour and a half away.  (My fiancé is from here.)  It seems I spend so much time at work that they do feel like friends.  I just don't want them to feel entitled to go or feel bad for not coming since it is a quite a drive and they won’t know anyone but my fiancé and I.  (My Fiancé used to work with them as well.)  Also where do I draw the line if I do invite some?  I work at a retail store with over 100 employees I cannot invite them all nor do I want to.  Does it hurt feelings to only invite a few or should I just forget about it all together?

Re: Who to invite?

  • I didn't invite any coworkers because I could invite everyone I hang out with outside the office, and couldn't choose among them. If you invite any, I would only invite the ones you would consider yourself friendly with. For example, I'd invite them if you socialize outside of work, as you mention you have with some. Do they show interest in your wedding, are they people you'd want to cultivate a friendship with?

I would definitely ask the ones you do invite to keep it quite so as not to hurt feelings.

  • OMG are you me? Every single thing in your post is my situation exactly, until you go to the part about your FI working with them too.

Anywho, a lot of people use the rule "invite them if you spend time with them outside of work." That's what I'm doing, and 2 of the 12 people in my office are getting invites.

You don't have to invite any of them though.

  • We have a very close group of friends in the office.  There are 13 of us 9 of us are close.  I can't afford to have all of them and their SO there.  I invited my one friend I'm extra close to and her bf.  No one else is invited.  It's hard because I also lived with one of them for a period of time but we're not super close so how do I invite her and not the ones I'm closer with.  I say use your judgement but for me none was easiest.
  • Thanks for the input.  You have confirmed what I was already thinking.  I will probably talk to them on Monday and see if they are interested.
  • I went through a similar issue... Out of 18 people in our office I spend time with 15 of them outside of work (average on at least once a month). I let guilt get the best of me... I now have a giant guest list! I would recommend going small! I love them all and will have a fabulous time but it sure costs a pretty penny...
