Do parents' co-workers normally get invited?

I am a MOH in a wedding.  The bride is trying to cut down the guest list- the bride's family is worried about the cost (can you blame them- 300 people at a nice venue?!?).The bride feels bad about asking the FMIL to cut her list even more.  (The FMIL is not paying for the extras and is using guilt against the bride.)  Then the bride tells me: "I feel bad - she already had to cut their co-workers?"
I told her that I was surprised they were on the list in the first place.  Unless co-workers are the parents' BFs - they aren't expected to be invited.
I don't know if the bride has been manipulated into believing this is a big cut to make or if I am wrong.  So please let me know what is normal.

  • The correct thing to do would have been to decide on a set number of guests before opening the list up to her families, but it's too late for that.

There is no 'normal' in this situation.  My mom is really close with her work friends and would have loved to invite them.

  • Tbe normalcy of who gets an invite to a wedding is context based on a number of things such as space, budget, feel of the wedding (big vs small) and what other parties are invited. There is no real way for any one to say for sure what is right for your friend's family.

That being said, your friend needs to have her FI talk to his parents in a factual and polite way about the limitations of the wedding guest list.

  • Ha ha.. thanks guys for your responses so far.

Personally- I heard of the B&G inviting their coworkers- but never the parents' co-workers.  But I figured I should do my research on this tonight before I talk with the bride again tomorrow.

I agree- she should have put limitations on the guest list in the very beginning.. but the B&G are the type who are used to getting things paid for in life and the realities of $ are kind of hitting them all at once.

I was just hoping to give some info to her that would make her not feel so guilty about this cut.  Thanks again guys for your responses.
  • Shouldn't she be doing the research?  It's her wedding, after all.
