Is it normal....

For your RSVP deadline to be 4 days away and 30 of your guests (1/3 of all invited) still haven't  formally responded? Please tell me this is normal!

Re: Is it normal....

  • YUP.  Unfortunately, a lot of people just "forget" or send it in on the last day.

Wait a couple of days after the RSVP deadline, then start calling or emailing guests to check on their RSVPs.  I guarantee you a whole bunch will come in a day or two after the deadline.

Ditto Baystate. Some people just forget to RSVP.

  • It's normal. A lot of people procrastinate on even the simplest things. And some people (especially if OOT people) don't know until right up to the wire if they can make it.
  • Yep, pretty typical.  After the RSVP date has passed, give them a quick call and get a verbal yay or nay.

  • Yes some people forget.

I also had 3 people who did mail them in on time, but the post office didn't delivery them until the week of the wedding.  In one case the postmark was 6 weeks before we got them.

Point is it's not always lazy guests.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • Some people also think that the RSVP date is the date that you MAIL it, rather than have it it (hopefully) delivered to the couple.
  • I think so. . . our deadline was today, and we still have 50 who haven't responded, which is about 1/3 of our invited guests as well.  Hoping a few more cards come in the next few days!!

  • Very normal.  Some of us honestly don't know until a week before if we can make it or not due to work schedules.
  • Thanks everyone! I was getting worried that maybe people just don't like us.Smile Luckily, we asked people to RSVP long before we have to give our final count to the venue.
  • Your wedding is on June 18.  DId you ask people to RSVP a full month before?  That could be part of the problem - people who work on the weekends might not be able to commit just yet because their work schedules aren't posted a month in advance. Generally, the RSVP is about 10-14 days prior to the wedding.

If you still have stragglers after the RSVP date, give them a call and give them another week or so to get their answer in to you since you built in your own cushion to the RSVP timeline.  As long as your venue has a 10 day (or so - check your contract) final count, you still have time.
