Re: Book club?

  • I'd love to read Bumped.
    Daisypath Anniversary tickers
  • I like your choices so far Keeks.

I'm going to say The Time Traveler's Wife and The Dogs of Babel and Prep and A Piece of Cake one more time because they are all amazing and practically changed my life.

[QUOTE]In Response to Re: Book club? : I envy you, still having so much of the series left to read. Reading HP for the first time is magical. Enjoy! (And I'll second everyone else's comments - no way you'll be able to take a break!) I always thought it would be fun to do a HP book club. Dorky, but fun.

I know, it feels like 1997 all over again!  My mom kept pressuring me to read them and finally just mailed me the first two books to get started.  I am loving them though!
  • I forgot about Dogs of Babel, excellent book and one that I need re-read because I'm sure I missed a lot of stuff.

  • Ooh I'd be interesting in reading Bumped too

  • So Dogs of Babel for #4?

Maybe we can vote for 2 for this month?
  • I want to play! I don't have any suggestions off the top of my head, but I like this idea of having 3 or 4 and voting.
  • I know A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius is OLD now, but I haven't gotten around to it yet.  It's at the top of my "to read" list.  I feel like I don't deserve my McSweeney's subscription until I actually read this, and have spent the last 10 years dodging it when it comes up in conversation because I'm too ashamed to admit to it.
  • I've added most of these books to my Amazon wish list now anyways.  Your list sounds good for votes Kiki.

  • Whats a Mcsweeney subscription?

That's on my "to read" list also. Don't feel too bad :-)

  • I think I really want to read all 4 of these books.  We could do the top 2 this month and then the other 2 next month.  Or just put them back into voting for next month.

  • I like them all, the hardest part will be picking only two of them.
  • haha I looked up a Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius on Amazon and when I went to click on "Add to Wishlist" there was also an option to "Add to Baby Registry".  Does Amazon know something I don't?

  • OH!  That totally reminds me and I can't believe I didn't share in the morning thread, but anyway.  My crazy friend's fiance told him she wants to start trying for a baby (this would be her 4th, his 1st) when he comes to visit next weekend.  This just gets better and better.

  • TR - I listed a few titles I found that seemed to be from the zombie POV during yesterday's book discussion.  World War Z was one; also Breathers: A Zombie's Lament, and Het Madden, A Zombie Perspective.
Well, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies was as well.

McSweeney's is a literary journal.  It used to contain only work that was rejected by others, but that's not so much the case anymore.  Dave Eggers, the author of AHWOSG, is the editor.  Hence my not feeling worthy of my subscription without having read his most recognized work.  I tend to look to McSweeney's publications to determine who I will read.  Having not read the full Eggers catalog, therefore, seems sinful to me.
  • What do you think about choosing one this month, since there's only 2 weeks left, and then 2 next month?

  • I love the book club idea....will respond to the other poll. ;-)
  • Mel, I had to read that book in college and I absolutely hated it.  I hated everything about it, and know no one who liked it.

I know it's reknowned, so it's very possible it's just the people I'm friends with, but... oh, Lord.  I'd rather read Twilight repeatedly for the rest of my life than read that book again.

Which one, A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius or Infinite Jest?

  • Sorry.  Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius.

I will never pick up a Dave Eggers work again.

You know, the reason I haven't read it yet is because of the reviews it got on Goodreads. I keep bumping it to the end of my list. It sounds like something I would love, and a really good story, but then I read the reviews again and I'm like "Meh. Maybe I'll wait."

  • If it's Infinite Jest, I shall never speak to you again.  I don't think I've loved anything so much in my life so much as I love Infinite Jest.  The amount of sleep I'm losing as I make my way through it is astounding.  If it's AHWOSG, I've heard mixed reviews...but I feel like not reading it has put me at a disadvantage among my friends, as books tend to be the most prominent topic.  It's like the time I misquoted Slaughterhouse Five...you don't live that sort of thing down.
  • It's very stream of consciousness.  It's been a long time since I read it, so I certainly don't remember a lot, but I recall feeling like it was about nothing at all, and he talked a lot about nothing at all.  Just not remotely my style.

I can't see that ending well for anyone. Fortunately all my friends are Eat, Pray, Love kind of people. Which means no one would know the difference, but also that we don't talk about books.

I added Infinite Jest to my list though, that looks awesome.

I have a group of friends like this.  This was the group I had the book club with.  They picked this book.  It ended badly.  I prefer my other friends.  I'm okay with that being bitchy.
