Alix! And potterphiles!

I saw a real, live game of Quiddich today.  I was at a work outting in the park, where our crew played softball.  And the field behind us had a quiddich game going.  I don't know if there was a snitch involved, but I can only imagine that it was a marble hidden in the grass, which would make it a combination of football, rugby, brooms, and an easter egg hunt.

I wish I'd had my real camera - my cell doesn't have enough zoom to see anything.

  • That's awesome!

So, before you read this, promise you won't judge

    promise?

Okay, so I used to be REALLY into Potterverse. There are, uh, conferences. I never went, but there are usually one or two a year in a major city and people dress up and everything. They always have panels, speakers, fun stuff and yes, a quidditch tournament. It sounded like so much fun.

  • There were no costumes or even jerseys, so that was a little strange, as was a bunch of adults running around with a broom between their legs.  Otherwise, I kind of think it's cute.

And I have no problem with people being into stuff like that.

Unless you dress up as a character in ALL of your off time.  Part of your life, occasionally?  NBD.  All of your life?  I can't relate.

  • Like the Peter Pan guy:

I personally didn't dress up in character because that's too much work (see my theme party thread from earlier) but I did have a Harry Potter shirt at one time.

I guess that story wasn't too bad, come to think of it.

  • That sounds like fun, except for the broom between the legs part.

  • That is SO cool! I bet it would be really fun, but it would probably be complicated to learn because so much goes on with all the different balls. I'm guessing they didn't have beaters...that would be pretty mean in a world with no magic to heal you.

    Have a good weekend!
  • I'm at McGill University, and we actually have our own Quidditch team! Apparently a couple different Canadian univeristies do, and they play against each other sometimes. When they practice, the actually delegate a person as the snitch, and they're allowed to hide anywhere on campus. I haven't payed enough attention to know what they do about beaters, though.

  • Yeah...there is definitely a quidditch team here too. I've seen them out (in costume, shuffling around with brooms) while out on the field. Playing real sports.
  • Uhhh....don't you have to like...fly to play Quidditch?

I want to go to the Harry Potter Theme Park...and maybe never come back. I'm so excited for the 7th movie it's slightly pathetic. FI doesn't want to go on opening night....we shall see about that....

  • Yep, PPs are right.  Lots of college campuses have Quidditch teams and the snitch is a person that dresses up in yellow and runs all over campus and hides. :) Not that I've been following college quidditch or anything.....hmmmm.........

  • I think this must have been a pick-up quiddich game.  :)
